    Default Jumping Mechanics

Recently did a quest in that level 3-7 pirate area. Think it was 3 barrel cove or something to that effect. I was doing not so bad until I hit an area where there was some rather interesting jumping involved.

You had to climb a high ladder then jump onto a ladder behind you. I have a 1/2ling dex build cleric. My dex is at 18 and I had a few potions of jump on me. Needless to say I did not make it through the challange before running out of healing from the falls.

I tried various methods with jump pots used but I could not seem to jump onto a ladder behind me while being on a ladder. Even if I got my character facing the right direction I was not able to grab ahold of the ladder for some reason and could see it pass before me as I would fall to my demise.

I know that there probably is a simple method for jumping backwards from one ladder to another but I was unable to figure it out.

Does anyone know the quest I was talking about as I am itching to try it again just would rather have the mechanics down prior to trying.

I didn't have any trouble with this one, and didn't need any jumping aids.
All you have to do is jump off the ladder, swivel your camera around, and press forwards.

Were you using feather falling? That makes that part much easier as falling slowly gives you more time to catch the ladders, and you don't suffer damage if you miss and fall back to the bottom.

You can get feather falling as a constant effect on some items, or as a "clickie", and arcane casters can cast the spell.

The quest you're talking about is Prove Your Worth (Rackham's Trial). Starts at the kobold pirate at the upper level of the docks.

The way I did the quest was to climb until I was just a sliver away from the point where I would automatically reach the top of the ladder and start falling. At this point, I would press spacebar to manually disengage from the ladder, hold right-click and swivel my camera, pressing W only after a quarter of a second (so that I don't catch onto the ladder I just let go of).

I noticed sometimes I would bug out when catching onto a new ladder, my character would warp and flicker up and down a few millimeters and then I'd appear at the bottom of the entire climb. I usually would not take damage when this bug occurred, and it happened to me infrequently enough that I wasn't sure what caused it and couldn't reproduce it at will.

If you have the Sharn Syndicate pack and a little patience, you can trivialize this portion of the quest by grinding up a no-ML feather fall item, then you can take your sweet time making your way up the climb.
I found the duration of clickies a little short to make the entire climb, and the spell would demand you were an arcane (and likely requires extend spell too, since the duration of FF is short).
If you lack the Sharn Syndicate chain, the other options are Ring of Feathers (STK end chest) with no ML, and regular feather fall random statted gear (ML5, I suppose you could get ML3 if it was race-required) - but those are generally quite expensive as they are good alt gear.

You can swivel first, press forward then jump too, which is a little smoother.

Or press "T" to get to Mouselook view.. that way you can swivel your camera 180 Degrees and unlike the normal view way.. when you jump you will automatically go the direction you're looking, which in this case is backwards... But yeah I suggest FF item just in case.

Cool I will try it again. I was jumping then trying to turn my whole body using the a or d keys while falling rather then just looking behind then jumping.

I knew it had to be something simple.

    Thanks for the advice

I had this same problem. My fix: tweak your turn speed up

By the way, Dex doesn't influence Jump, Str does. If you're wearing a heavy shield or armour take that off before difficult jumps.

Us old men with old men reflexes will never be able to do this quest ever. I recommend skipping it.

Awww, I had hoped this was a thread about athletic repeater wielding rogues.

Seriously, it's not that hard - use mouse look (I prefer holding right mouse button down for that) so that you face the ladder you want to get to and jump. I recommend using a feather fall item in case something goes wrong.

This difficult jumping section is made much easier by using a feather fall item or grouping with an arcane that has the feather fall spell (for new undergeared players).

Feather fall will make you fall much slower - and enable you to grab the ladders with ease.

It is however quite possible without feather fall or a jump spell/potion.

the jump skill is determined by STR - not DEX, and halflings are naturaly not good jumpers as they are small and not strong. Additionaly clerics tend to wear heavy armour and cary sheilds - armour and sheilds give something called armour check penalty - this is a penalty to various skills - including jump based on the size of your armour/sheild.

If you are encumbered - you also get a sever penalty to jump. Any thing over light encumberance will cause you to suffer large penalties to jumping. It is likely you were encumbered as encumberance limits are based on STR and race and halflings usffer a penalty on both of these counts.

    So... to retry that quest.

    1. make sure your encumberance is light - this can be found on your inventory screen.
    2. take of your armour and sheild to do the jumps.
    3. get a feather fall item, or party with a wizard who is willing to cast the feather fall spell.

Good luck, hope this info helps.

Although their racial +2 jump bonus more than makes up for their strength penalty.

This quest is "unfair" to most players.

it is actually easy to do, but is so unlike any other jumping in the game, that you really need to have someone teach you how to do it.

And.... it is waaaaaayyyy easier with a permanent Feather Fall item equiped.

Ok, for this one use mouse look mode.

Do not climb all the way to the top of the ladder you are on, or you will fall off.

Turn toward the ladder you want to jump to.

Hit jump and move forward.... you should catch the ladder without any trouble.

FF helps more than jump skill I think. But I believe that I have done this one without FF before.... but I had already done it several times on other toons, so I knew what I was doing first.

Anyway...... it took another player telling me how to do it the first time.
But once I knew, it was actually easy.
