    Default Question about blocking spells...

Ok, heres something that's been puzzling me for AGES now.

Sometimes, I go into PvP just to have a little fun. When I cast spells however, there is a rare case that the spell is negated with a nightshield-like effect. Some of it is easy to explain; the person either has nightshield on, and im casting magic missle, or the person has deathblock on, and im trying to cast a insta-death spell. However, there are some times when the effect blocks all spells, even greater dispel magic and nimbus of light!

I know that's hard to believe, but I've encountered it before. Can somebody please explain how you block all spells with a nightshield like effect? If, indeed, it is not a game exploit, which I doubt it would be in the first place, then whatever this item is, it must surely be a powerful item or effect...

Spell Resistance - Drow have a bit naturally, and it can also be found on items. It produces the blue "force field" like effect you've been seeing.

It cannot block things like Nimbus, but I'd chalk that up to either you just missing outright, or somebody else trying to land a spell on em at the same time and it being resisted.

I know for certain that its not spell resistance; if it was, I would see a failed dice roll fallowed by a blue shield.

Nightshield is purple and square. Not sure what the effect was, as I described earlier, but its not SR. And I know some spells just do not have spell resistance at all.

Globes of invulnerability (lesser, standard, greater) will block the spells you speak of if you are targeting people inside them.

I know its not those, because we're talking about a PvP session in a tavern brawl, but that I know is also true.

Ahhhh, that might explain it. Most of the time it takes about 5 tries to break through it, but on a very rare occassion, it doesnt work.

So...this mantle of the worldshaper...is this one of those bound items you get in a raid? Might explain why I dont see it in the AH...

By the way, thanks for answering my question.

it has 5 charges and recharges in the pit. the faster you deplete it, the earlier you can damage your opponent. if youre too slow the charges just recharge

I totally forgot about Worldshaper - but that would also do it.
It's an item at the end of the Threnal quest chain, not a raid. But it is bound, and I think to character not account (could be wrong on that tho).

You mean the scarab of spell absorbtion? Yeah, its 50 charges. I've seen those before as loot from Devil's Assault.

Recharges in the pit, you say? Not sure how that works and since I dont have ruins of Thernal ill never get it...

Oh well, thanks for answering my questions guys.

I believe it is a named item that can show up on the end reward list for the Threnal series (House P, ~lvl 8-11). I've been meaning to get out there, so I'm not positive on the specifics.

But that and Scarabs of Protection are what are causing the graphic and effect you keep encountering. They're very useful, as they absorb any spell, including things like the guard-effect from striking someone with a Fire Shield up.

Really now? I didnt think it was possible to block the fire shield's damage with that...very interesting.

I bet though at the same time its a VERY fast way for the charges to run out though...I think it would be better to just use fire resist than the scarab for blocking that...

But if you say it blocks ALL the spells, does it also block those annoying light spells in Running with the Devils quest?

Tested with Fire Shield in PvP (someone else had cloak, I had spell) in order to determine whether it might work to absorb the ticks of damage from the shadowfiends in ToD--it worked in PvP, but did not work against the Shadowfiends.

Haven't gone to test it in Running, but since they are casting spells, it should function.

Should be mentioned that 1 charge is used PER SPELL HIT. So a VERY easy way for the protection to fade is from a high level caster's magic missle.

End reward from Threnal south. Equip it along with Voice of the Master, and get permanent true sight and regeneration.

There's also a silver flame item from the Necropolis series, and a Beholder Optic nerve from Invaders!

As others have said, it's probably the Mantle of the Worldshaper: http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s...orldshaper.jpg. It is always on the list of end rewards from the Threnal series.
