Lucky Hat looks cool, but I'm very disappointed that it's such a hassle to switch helms and toggle helm graphic on and off to use it for appearance.

Fusiox, who was/is also frustrated by the players inability to choose their own appearance in DDO has posted yet another Thread requesting Turbine add armour appearance customisation to DDO. Maybe oneday they will listen to us... instead of adding tacky and immature Cosmetic gimmicks to the DDO store.
Anyways you can read Fusiox's good post here:

kind regards,

The fact that these tacky cosmetic gimmicks have recently arisen leads me to beleive that they have in fact been listening, and that these tacky gimmicks are the precursor to answering us.
The mechanic as it is now stinks, but the promise has been shown. Be patient, but keep asking.

I spent quite a bit of time hex-editing my chars back in NWN2 so they wouldn't have default appearance - while wondering why nobody thought of adding an in-game item editing feature.
...
I would really like to see options for item appearance customisation in DDO - I particularly like the idea of tweaking existing Deneith and Kundarak vendors.
I would also like to get more options for customising physical appearance and hairdos - something more complex than buying one-shot hair tonics from DDO store.
Jorasco barbers/hair dressers anybody...?
I would be fine with either being able to create an outfit item, overriding exiting item appearance, or actually modify existing items to personal taste.
I've been hoarding +5 gear for a while - and I had to give away PINK adamantine plate because I couldn't really picture my cleric wearing it.
It clashed with his eyes...
I can see the problem with giving unique appearance to mundane gear - as detailed in other threads.
We could merge ideas so players unlocking rare gear, or buying rights to a VIP customisation smithy, could choose "unique" appearance even when wearing mundane gear, if they wanted to.
At the same time, especially if we chose the outfit path, we could stave off potential abuse or scams, by restricting rare appearance to rare gear - or by char level/char favour/player achievements.
I would also like to be able to buy - in-game of from DDO store - textures and meshes as whole collections - and being able to switch betwen them with relative ease.
I liked the idea of hair tonics, but I dislike the idea of one-shot uses, without any means to preview results.
I wouldn't want one-shot armour re-texturing either.
...
DDO does have a social part to it too - we don't exist in a vacuum, playing 1st person with nobody else around.
Other players get to see our characters, and for some of us, choosing a fitting appearance for our "avatars" is just as important as being kitted out with the best gear platinum can buy.
If anything, even being able to solo a character whose appearance I agreed with, would make me more likely to create more, maybe buy more features, and play with my chars longer, ensuring an influx of money to store.
Long story short, signed.

Customization is IMO one of the best features about MMO's. Also, you might want to look at http://secondlife.com/?v=1.1 's virtual customization. You can literally upload your own skins then trade/sell them to other players.

I have to agree that the premise of named items in an MMO game is full of problems. Mainly, as you said, that they're not unique as many players have them. The point I'm trying to add is that an item can be powerful enough for a 20th level whatever to wear without being unique. In fact, unique gear would likely, in a realistic setting, be more powerful than the unique items here.
