Question WHY join a Guild anyway?

Since I'm new to MMORPGs I really don't know: Why would I wanna join a Guild anyway? I mean, what's in it for me?!? (Besides letting everybody know that I'm in a Guild called "Legolas Thunderfart's Super Awesome Powernoobs"...) Is it really just to "be a part of something"? (OMFG Guild Ghallanda, this must really be the worst guild sales pitch ever.)

Unlike other games the guilds here are not necessary to your survival, but they do give you a pool of companions to quest with. I like theme guilds...I've run across a gaggle of halflings already. I just entered an Anglo-French guild so I can brush up on my second language. Something like that is more important to me than just being in a guild. I was in one that was nothing but random invites from the owner; you couldn't have any other chat due to his constant spamming. I dropped that one pretty quick.
What do you mean a -6 armor class is no good any more?

So it's just about the socializing then, eh? No appeal for mercenaries and chaotic neutral bountyhunters. ^^

A Theme Guild might be fun...

Well if you're into Roleplay, you could try an RP guild. Some of them enforce certain rules to go along with the RP theme and give the members 'benefits'; for example, my friend was telling me about a Thelanis spellcaster guild that requires it's members to hand over all scrolls and spellcaster loot that they loot and then hands them out to lowbie spellcasters (mainly wizards for inscribing) or to those who need them (rather than junking them first). I've also heard of a 'mercenaries' guild that offers junk services with a lvl 20 haggle bard and then pays the members a 'stipend' with half the profits (it's a little more complicated than that, but that's the gist of it).

Regular guilds, though, are usually a source of knowledge and build advice (as well as free stuff), and an easy way to continue adventuring with the same group of trusted friends. Generally big, high-level guilds require you to prove your worth in some sort of way, whether it be through running a high-level raid and demonstrating your abilities or perhaps just being recognized by an officer or other member.

A guild is no more or less than what its members make of it.

Well, there are those that people mentioned and... Since you are new some guilds will definitely help 'you' with what you may or may not want to know about the game! lol Not only can 'we' help in that respect but having a 'decent' group of people to possibly quest with almost every time you logon... "We" also have a few F2P guildmates.

the rep of the guild is pretty much important when guild runs open up a couple of pug spots. given a player from a good guild and another from a questionable one joins, you can be sure the player from the reputable guild will get into the run. on khyber, there are already several guilds being blacklisted by quite a number of guilds for continued subpar performance, inability to follow instructions, etc
If you want to know why...

I wrote this up on my.ddo.com at one point, guess it fits here:

Why do you join a guild?

Is it to run raids? Take it slow and be in a constant state of re-roll? I always wondered why other people join guilds. To me, its about being part of something. Knowing a group of people well enough to be able to know, without a word, what they will be doing next. I like the feeling that the guy next to me is a great player, and I know they have my back. I don’t have to worry about what types of weapons they have, or what spells they may be carrying, because it will always be the appropriate stuff. I have a strong sense of loyalty when it comes to whatever guild I’m in. The guild is always first, no matter what. Its these people I run with, my comrades in arms, that are the ones that will not leave my side when the going gets tough. They’ll laugh a wipe off, and figure out what went wrong, and correct it. They don’t just ditch me. They aren’t out only for themselves. They are there for the betterment of the whole.

This is just a game, and that may sound a bit serious, but I treat my relationships in game, like I would in real life. Alot of my guildmates I would consider friends. I talk with them on the phone, hell, we’ve even had guild parties were people have come from all over the US to meet up.

What saddens me, is when people join guilds for the wrong reasons. “I have to have 32 shrouds done a week, and come hell or high water, new content or not, I will step on anyones toes to get that done”. “I want to run my lowbie, I know you guys are trying to figure out the new raids etc, but sorry, I want to do what I want to do.” ”Anybody want to join this pug shroud I just got in? Other guildies say hey lets just do our own as a guild, so its formed up, and that guy that said join the pug, stays in the pug and doesn’t come with his guild mates.” ”I, I, I, me, me, me”. These type of people are out for only themselves. They are not out to help THE WHOLE, they’d as soon let you drop in a run over sacraficing themselves to keep you alive, even when they know you will win the day if they keep you up. Why in gods green earth would you want someone like this in your guild?

I don’t get why people are not loyal to their guilds. Why are you there if you won’t stick with the guy next to you? In my mind, a guild becomes to these people, just a constant pool to pug from.

So what are your thoughts? Why do you join a guild? Are you loyal to your guild?

In my experience, people are less trusting of unguilded players. This may be a throwback from when we had plat farmers joining groups and leeching. I went guildless for a while, but got tired of not being accepted into parties on my new toon because I had no guild name.

I would have to agree to this as we are going thru the same on argon server and the newer guilds are creating havak in the upper lvls. I also look into who the party leader is before i join that party....mainly what guild he comes from and if i join one and find a blacklisted player then i will let the party leader know and tell him that iam unable to run with that player but usually i catch that when i look at the makeup up of who is already in the party
    Well anyway good luck

What I have found, not being in a real guild, is that there are all these great players who I see, who are fun to run with... I add them to my friends list.

And go a year without grouping with them again.

Because they are always running in full groups of guildies.

And if they have alts, I wouldn't even know about them.

But if we were in the same guild, I would get to group with them a lot more.
And have 12 people to do a raid with.

But, most of the people I like are in different guilds.
And I do have some RL friends in my guild (they just never play. )
Added some new people recently, but seems we are never on the same time, or with the same lvl chars.... oh well.
I gave up a life of farming to become an Adventurer.

Most ppl join guilds because they enjoy playing in static groups. That way they don't have to deal with those ppl that always join a group and then half way through a quest say "gotta go". Plus another up side to playing in a static group is that you can player easier and more effective with ppl who's styles of play you are used to.

    Default Just a quick re-cap

The reasons to join a guild are:

    Friendship (peps to talk to)

Static groups (knowing who it is u are playing with and that they are good)

Rep (the guilds rep can make you look good, thus getting you into parties)

Asistance (in both economic and leveling related fashions)

I joined my guild so I have a private audience to vent my frustrating PUG experiences.
