Game won't go from realm selection to character page

Tries to load game, but fails 1-20 times, then quits and gives error message "connection failure: client timed out."
I'm new, any suggestions?
On a side note, I uninstalled turbine downloader because it wasn't working, got the game installed fine w/o it. Could this be my problem? if so, i might be screwed, cause I couldn't get turbine to work at all... prolly cause I'm at a university that has too much protection on it's wi-fi?
I've tried completely disabling both windows firewall and kapersky (I have vista), and although doing so allowed me to install, it hasn't let me play.

I somewhat have the same problem but my client isn't installed aparantly. It makes no sence.
