if you mean gamepad as in xbox/ps style controller then i'd seriously advise against it.
you really need a keyboard as there's a lot of commands at your finger tips plus having to type (if you're without mic)
personally i have a supplementary keypad that allows me to (dumb)macro and i can confirm this works.
Playing DDO with a gamepad is perfectly possible ASIDE from actually typing in chat/tells.
Forum searching can be a good place to start: http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php...hlight=gamepad
Freeman - Human Bard - Thelanis Fulfilling my duty to the ladies of Stormreach
Yuvben(Halfling Rogue), Acana(Drow Sorcerer), Walket(Human Cleric), Mahoukami (WF Wizard), Knicapper(Horc Fighter), Pyetr(Human Bard), Mazinger (WF Barb), and Belcar(Halfling Ranger).
Here is another shot of the setup I use.
The gamepad was like$12 at Gamestop.
It works well, I pretty much only use the mouse for opening quests and selling/repairing.
This setup gives 2 full hotbars and attack, jump, block, push-to-talk, target nearest enemy, mouse click (for opening doors and chests), and of course movement.
The game plays completely different, more like an FPS......

sorry if i fail you.
really.
terribly sorry.
please forgive me.
Game pads are a bad idea for MMO's, Mainly because there are too many buttions and really you need a keyboard to control everything right at your finger tips.

I used a gamepad all the time and I have absolutely no problems controlling anything. I play with my PS3 controller hovering over the keyboard, so any key I need to hit is within easy reach. Personally I find movement to be a heckuva lot easier with analog sticks than WASD and a mouse - it might not be as totally precise as keyboard movement, but it feels much more natural. The combination of controller movement and keyboard hotkeys works really good, especially for those of us who mostly play console games. It even frees up keys, since I can assign things to the controller that would normally have to be on the keyboard.
so what you're saying is that keyboards are the better option in some circumstances? ...fail!? *sigh*
hence my recommendation for something like this (providing he hasn't already got a joypad)
http://www.dabs.com/products/saitek-...trol-47XC.html
it comes with an analogue switch which your thumb uses for movement something like 144 different buttons thanks to shift modes and allows you to assign multiple commands to a single button (i.e. my start quest buffs)
admittedly it's a different way of playing and may not be to everyone's taste but for a game like this i would say it beats a joypad.
I've got mapped to my xbox360 controller:
attack
Movement - strafe - jump - block
Hotbars 1-4 so = 40 clickies
map on/off 9( i'm considering swopping this out to enable 1 more hotbar (+10 clickies)
mouse look on/off
select next Party member
select next monster
select next item
select self
and mouse functionality (cursor movement and LB and RB)
I have 10 bars on my screen but 6 of them are situational so access via the joystick mouse cursor control is not life threatening.
combat abilities are mapped to the 40 i have quick pad button access to.
I can do everything except:
If i'm typing - i need the keyboard
If i want to zoom in/out i need the mouses 3rd button.
I do make use of the mouse occassionally from precision cursor action like when i'm managing inventory out of combat.
It works great for me.
