if you mean gamepad as in xbox/ps style controller then i'd seriously advise against it.

you really need a keyboard as there's a lot of commands at your finger tips plus having to type (if you're without mic)

personally i have a supplementary keypad that allows me to (dumb)macro and i can confirm this works.

Playing DDO with a gamepad is perfectly possible ASIDE from actually typing in chat/tells.

Here is another shot of the setup I use.

The gamepad was like$12 at Gamestop.

It works well, I pretty much only use the mouse for opening quests and selling/repairing.

This setup gives 2 full hotbars and attack, jump, block, push-to-talk, target nearest enemy, mouse click (for opening doors and chests), and of course movement.

The game plays completely different, more like an FPS......

Game pads are a bad idea for MMO's, Mainly because there are too many buttions and really you need a keyboard to control everything right at your finger tips.

I used a gamepad all the time and I have absolutely no problems controlling anything. I play with my PS3 controller hovering over the keyboard, so any key I need to hit is within easy reach. Personally I find movement to be a heckuva lot easier with analog sticks than WASD and a mouse - it might not be as totally precise as keyboard movement, but it feels much more natural. The combination of controller movement and keyboard hotkeys works really good, especially for those of us who mostly play console games. It even frees up keys, since I can assign things to the controller that would normally have to be on the keyboard.
