Question Best race for Monk ... I know this post again

    Hey guys !

I was wondering... what s the best race for a monk (pure)

I really hesitate between human vs Halfing...

Halfing seem to have huge advantage : halfing guile, +1 AC, + 1 attack bonus, and some racial bonus... but i think they kind look of ugly.

Human seems well balanced with a bonus for healing

Need you advice and tought about it

    Thx for your help !

You cant go wrong w/ either of those races really. I prefer humans over halflings because halflings look like chimpanzee's to me, and run all goofy like.

I play a dwarf monk... Current 320 HP and 46 ac at lvl 17. I can resurrect fallen comrades if a cleric is busy or dead. And I can stand up to any giant rather well... They go down quick with 10 effective attacks.

if you have a 32 point build
    halfling, human or dwarf

no 32 pt then I say go drow dex & wis build

    no drow
back to human and halfling. I'd lean towards halfling with a dex & wis build

    -----
ignoring my first 28 pt balanced human which was my first toon, that was a learning experience.
my path 1st was human 28 pt build balanced build worked great till lvl 9. then I started getting rocked. by then I had drow so rolled again and passed down what gear I could now the drow is lvl 7 dex & wis build and that should get me through till reincarnate or 32pts.
Move along , Nothing to see here

Monks are a good solid class (I know who would thought to read that LOL) so ANY race can really fit in the mold of a monk. However, IMHO, the tope three races for monks are Humans, Halflings and Warforged. As of the current content mod 9.x, this holds true.

It's really up to you. Would you rather have "halfing guile, +1 AC, + 1 attack bonus, and a +2 racial dex bonus", or "an extra feat, two +1 racial stat bonuses, human versatility, and healing amp"

Wrong... Humans make great monks, and assuming your join date is correct, your knowledge of the game needs to grow more. You saying that is like saying Halflings are mediocre theives.

Humans and Halflings are the best monks, more experienced players Warforged are great monks... Other races are suboptimal for monks but not lacking but it ultimately comes down to the player skills and their gameplay.

Even if halflings are better monks if you don't like how they look you probably won't want to play the character. My monk is human and I love her. Humans are nice and balanced with their starting stats and since monks need so many different stats to be really effective the balance is quite nice. Humans have the extra feat which is also beneficial, and human adaptability is also nice letting you put +1 in two different stats since, again, monks benefit from so many. Halflings do make great monks, it's true, but humans are a very decent choice as well. Ultimately it comes down to what you like the best. Will the little bit of extra damage you get from being a halfling really be worth while if you hate the way your character looks? The answer for me was no, so I went with human.

    Talking

I struggled between Human, Halfling, and WF a few weeks ago, and I settled on Halfling. It was the sneak damage that swayed me. Several people told me that they'll do more damage all in all than other races for this reason, and I've found it to be true whenever something's attacking my hireling or another party member.

Also, halflings may run funny, but IMO their voice is easier on the ears than the male human's. The human voice sounds like it should belong to a seven foot tall pro wrestler. =P

Plus... I get to be a hand-to-hand fighter wearing glasses. That's a bundle of cool points in my book.

human can make up for the halfling +1 attack +1 ac by the two stat points that can be distributed to e.g. dex and wis - this allows the human monk to potentially get +1 ac and +1 attack depending on exceptional stat distribution

I've found I've loved the ability for a human to switch those two +1 stats around especially with the introduction of +1 exceptional stats and things like +7 dex gloves and +4 tomes.. it's just really nice having the flexibility.

the big thing with halflings (imho) is the sneak bonus which, when combined with unbalancing strike, makes for some very potent sneak attacks. but this is quite action point expensive... for the same cost a human monk could get damage boost and use that in end fights on mobs that are not vulnerable to sneak attack.

It's swings and roundabouts, as Mobeius says there is no 'best' race for a monk, but WF, human and halfling are definitely towards the top end of choices.

Don't forget that if you can't come up with a name that you like you will also probably hate your character. It's sometimes the superficial things that can make or break a character.

First, let me state that I agree with t0r012 - IF you do not have 32 pt build Drow is best

Second, what race you want will depend upon what type of toon you are doing.

If you are going to solo Drow is still best for Dex based and for pumping up your skills. However, Warforged are best for Str based and the various immunities.

If you are building a Dex based monk, Halfling is better UNLESS you are Dragonmarking. Then, you have a much better selection from human (although usually, the Elf sentinel line or the halfling heal line is taken). However, you may have a problem with dps.

If you are building a Utility Monk (back up for just about anything), you are better going human (or elf) as well as taking levels of rogue or cleric (for traps). Still, you will have to live with the fact that you are JUST good - not great at everything.

If you are building a Str Monk, Warforged or Dwarf work much better. Although, you will not be able to do much with AC for either of these races.

Neither of them can have this stat breakdown:

    STR 16
    DEX 16
    CON 12
    INT 8
    WIS 16
    DEX 8

    Only one race can...
