The two thousand, three hundred and eighty-six Americans who died that day will always be remembered with valor, for it was their sacrifice that allowed America to enter into and fight a war for the freedom and salvation of millions of others.
My father used to tell stories of his childhood buddy, Harry Givens. Mr. Givens went from a small town in MO to joining the USN. He was aboard Arizona on 7 Dec. Much laater when I was stationed in Pearl I saw his name on the memorial wall.
Got to meet some survivors of the attack that year as well. One of them was aboard Oklahoma. He told the story of how when the ship capsized a few of them were trapped in comparment that had a port hole. The ship's chaplain, a fellow named Schmidt was big guy and helped push folks out through the port hole. When it was Ch. Schmidt's turn, he was too big to go through, so he stayed, got everyone else out and then drowned. He was awarded a posthumous Navy Cross.
Out on the flight deck today I looked up and saw our flag at half mast. We paused for a moment to remember shipmates long past. Then we went on with the business of the day.
