Hah! Too funny...
Actually they probably do still have the character in existence under your personal space on the server just in case they ever need to roll back the servers to a specific date. It would be rather stupid for them not to back up characters and data. You could always call account support and plead your case to them and see what happens: http://www.ddo.com/ddosupport/account-support
It might be idiot-proof, but it's sure not a secure method. I hope none of you ever run into a situation where your characters are deleted by someone other than yourself. Beware of the malice of thy wife!
DDO used to not even have the "type in character name to confirm deletion" feature, it was added when people were 1 stroke deleting them. I guess they could make it alittle more fool proof, maybe about 50-60 boxes popping up 1 at a time with "Are you sure you want to delete this character you just typed out?" and "Are you absolutly positive?" OP, I'm not poking at you, its the people that want more. they always want more. If Turbine DID institute a feature like Windows Recycle Bin, they'd want another back-up to bring their stuff back when they "emptied the bin." Can someone find me ANY POST where Turbine did anything and nobody complained?
I am sorry you lost your items though, hopefully there wasn't anything that'll be too hard to replace, like a Bloodstone or anything.

didn't you know? the whole thing requiring the player to type in the name of character is acting like the confirmation of EMPTYING RECYCLE BIN, you do it, it's gone
on another note, why oh why does windows give you the option of just instantly delete permanently by holding shift before you press delete?
besides, if they really allow the whole detele-then-bring-back, then what's to stop users from using that to put their character "on hold" to free up a slot and then bringing the old character back? =_=
PS: Greensteel RUINED the game! and you all know it!
less buffing, more nerfing!!!
to make it easier for those of you that wants to avoid me in game, all my characters are in "Bladesworn Mercenaries"
???...You have to enter the characters name to delete them. How do you delete something like that without meaning to? This makes no sense.
/facepalm
Pretty hard to accidently delete the wrong guy since you have to type the name in and all, now I did accidently delete somone before I checked his bank![]()
Beware the Sleepeater
An recovery function would be a great way of freeing space for try out characters, or using mules.
We get a rolling 7 day recycle bin.
I get a 8 free mules and I can 'delete' one each day and then recover the one at the longest period.
I hope I never am gone for too long, but hey, I could just call up and complain for them to extend the retention period.
Mostly unrelated, I have on more than one occasion had to recover mail for people that organize all their mail in their deleted items folder in Exchange....

Some neat swords that i thouhgt i would never use but was in the action house
But thank i will try the support and see what i can do
Uhhh....totally untrue.
Turbine regularly backs up data any other company hosting solutions on network servers.
A typical, simple situation would be: Backup data is stored at an offsite by a third party. To restore data costs a fee to the third party (say $100 for perspective, could easliy vary to a higher number). Take also Turbine technical staff locating the files and adding them to a production environment (staff time costs pushing into the hundreds of dollars. For offering this as a service, add on support and marketing costs. Furthermore likely a poor return on investment for all the money it would take to setup a service. Keep in mind this is a purposely simple layman's explanation for a scenario likely more complex and expensive to the business that has a responsibility to its employees, investors AND PLAYERS to be profitable in order to stay in business delivering an outstanding game.
OR implement a check and balance system to prevent accidental deletions like we currently have in place (type the character name) and ignore the one-offs. It is OUR responsibility to maintain our characters. We have no one to blame but ourselves if we delete our characters.
