    Default Ideas for BIO?

Hi, i'm pretty new to DDO, but one of the first things I noticed when I had started playing was this little window called the BIO window! Amazing, you can write anything in there... But most players seem to have it blank. However i've had the pleasure of reading some innocent bystanders BIOs in the Harbor and it got me thinking about writing one for myself.

Having know back knowledge of RP, or story writing, I was wondering; how does one go about writing a BIO? What are the things that I should contemplate including in this short paragraph about my character?

Should it be written in the sense that it is coming literally from the character?; "My parents were killed by wolves, for 10 years I was living in the undergrowth jungle of blablablabla (You get the point)"

Or should it be written coming from me?; "My characters name is Boxsmasher McDrunkface because he likes to drink beer and smash boxes, har har har"

Give me some little pointers in which direction to go with this, I think it's a really nice, personal touch to add to your character and i've been pondering over it all day.

    Thanks

Write a character that you want to play, or someone you'd like to be.

    simple..

for your first character, it should be 'logy'
for your second character, it should be 'graphy'
for your warforged character, it should be 'nic'

of course you could always try and be creative & change color every other word, that always makes it fun to read, no matter WHAT you say!

Be funny. People aren't going to read your drawn-out background and comment on your writing prowess. They'll see a one-to-two line funny bio and send you a tell saying "lol cool bio dude", and that will give you a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

'Course, that's my experience. Remember that your bio space can be considered horribly small if you want to actually write out a somewhat detailed explanation of what you will. A paragraph or two at most, I'd say.

Personally, I like my character biographies to be ominous… For example, I plan to True Reincarnate my main to a FvS and a Cleric eventually. When I do this I plan on adding all the “This person has died” messages from party chat. I hope there’s enough room in the bio…
Things worthy of Standing Stone going EXTREME PREJUDICE™ on.:
    • Epic and Legendary Mysterious ring upgrades, please.
    • Change the stack size of filigree in the shared bank to 50. The 5 stack makes the shared bank worthless for storing filigree in a human usable manner.
    • Fixing why I don't connect to the chat server for 5 minutes when I log into a game world.
    • Fixing the wonky Lightning Sphere and Tactical Det firing by converting them to use alchemist spell arcing.
    • Redoing the drop rates of tomes in generic and raid loot tables.

I always write my bio in the third person as seen from the characters point of view. A brief history. You can use stuff that you only find in DDO. Maybe your character was born on Korthos Island or grew up on the streets of the Harbor in Stormreach. The Eberron Campaign Setting can give you more background information, as well.

Funny quotes from friends and guildies and stupid people.....

    Default I am big on...

I am big on the origin story, plus insights into the characters pysche.

    Perhaps character quotes and accomplishments.

What's cool is...that you do not have ot write it all now...

    You can BUILD on it!

Ok thanks guys, this is all really really helpful. Just one thing though; Tilliak wrote that you can only use things occur in DDO. Without having an amazing background knowledge of DnD or DDO it's going to get pretty tricky for me I think. But yeah I like the idea of writing it from a 3rd person perspective.

No no, I meant that you don't have to have a lot of D&D background or Eberron background. You can use stuff that you have only found in DDO. Granted, at a low level you may not have seen the Ruins of Gianthold, or Tempest Spine, but you can build on what you have already seen. Your bio can be whatever you want it to be. I always find it a bit odd for someone's bio to state that they are from Neverwinter, considering that that is another world entirely, but it can be whatever you want it to be.

One popular idea is to have information that helps you solve some of the game's more complex puzzles.

In particular, reminders for how to solve Shroud 5x5 puzzles are good there.
    I don't have a zerging problem.

    I'm zerging. That's YOUR problem.

Who. What. When. Where. How. Why.

Answer these six questions and you should have a decent bio that any RPer would be proud of.

Or at the very least, use the following as a starting off point:

Why did (your character's name) decide to become a (your character class)? Why did he/she become an adventurer instead of staying home, settling down and raising a family like everyone else you grew up with?

Answer those questions, then the rest is just window dressing.

    Have fun!
