    Default Ranger/Wizard or Ranger/Sorcerer build

hey i put this in the ranger forums too, but I'm putting it here and in the wizard and sorcerer forums just to make sure i get the most opinions.

"hey i recently got my Drow Ranger on Sarlona server up to lvl 4 so i finally get the spells and earlier on i was thinking of adding 1 or 2 lvls of some other class to help make it a bit more rounded. I was thinking rogue before but i don't have very high int and pretty poor search skill (int is 10 because of drow bonus, and search is 10 only because of points spent at lvl 2-4.)

Recently though i was in a group doing kobold assault and someone wanted to make a Ranger/Wizard or ranger/Sorcerer. What i was wandering is would either of these be a good class to splash into my Ranger to make him a little more effective with spells or would it be a waste of lvls and time?"

I'd go with option C: None of the above. In other words, don't do it.

If you are going to multi-class: build your starting stats around the multi-class, plan your feats around the multi-class, and plan your skills around the multi-class. Multi-classing on whim rarely turns out well for late game.

So you may want to re-roll.

    Otherwise . . .

If you want a Ranger Wizard splash, I would go with one - three levels, much more then that takes a toll on BAB.

Level 1: That is enough to get a couple of utility spells (that could admittedly be replaced with clickies), & get around arcane UMD
Level 2: get Wizard Wand and Scroll Mastery I
Level 3: a Stat buff, blur, and Wizard Wand Heightening I

This will make you a wand slinging Ranger.

I would say that wiz would be > sorcerer for this so that you could get a greater number of spells and switch out at taverns. Int will be more useful to a Ranger then Cha due to the increased skill points Int would get you.

If your charisma is already high . . . well might you want a bard splash? You would still have a decent amount of skills per level, get songs and not have to worry about light armor raining on your spell casting.

    Otherwise part 2 . . .

Ranger abilities combine really well with Rogue, you could do a ranger rogue with high UMD and simulate a caster if you get a nice stack of wands.

Telling someone that something is a bad idea without bothering to say why may not really help . . .

sorry, not trying to be mean here, but where did i say anything about cha? plus since i am a ranger i put more into wis for spells then int, so wouldn't a sorcerer splash be better since it's based off of wis also?

I see your point with the rogue but my problem for not going with that is that i don't have very high int and as such do not have a very good search which is kind of essential with a rogue.

I also don't want to re-roll since I've done that too many times already and it sometimes takes me a lot of time to get to lvl 4+ depending on what class and build i go with.

But i see your point in all of the matters and right now I'm leaning towards a sorcerer splash, but if i don't find it to my liking I'll re-roll and go with a rogue/ranger build, besides i always wanted to try a drow rogue but never really liked the rogue class because i can't be creative enough to use it to it's fullest potential.

Sorcerers run off of CHA, not WIS.

Well see, here's your problem. Sorcerer spells aren't based off of wisdom, they're based off of charisma.

The general rule to multiclassing is this: never, EVER decide to multiclass on a whim. If you want to multiclass then you need to plan that before you even click on the create character button. Anything else is just uncivilized (and exceptionally noobish).

doh! dang it, your right demoyn. and so are all of you other guys, you've all been great, usually i plan out characters i want to multi-class before hand but i had already gotten this one going and just thought about it a little and thought i could work something in there.

Well in light of this new information I've decided I'll just re-roll into a ranger/rogue, thanks again guys sorry for my incredible stupidity.

    Unhappy

I started with a wiz - got to lvl 8 - but he died

    ...a lot

    So i re-rolled a multiclass rog/ran

    good yes?

i then got to level 3 as a rog to take advantage of the extra sneak attack

then i took my first ranger level and saw that you need to be 18 ranger for tempest 3

    doh and double doh

still we live and learn and pass it on

Ranger18/rogue2 isn't a bad build. I wouldn't really suggest ranger17/rogue3, though, for the reasons you mention.

Rgr Wild Empathy is based on Cha btw.

But I'm a fan of Rgr##/Wiz5 or Wiz7. Or maybe Rgr9/Wiz11. Esp WF.

There's a very capable Dragon Marked halfling Rgr15/Wiz5 running around, with Rgr devotion enhancements and meta0magics to get the most out of his healing dragonmarks.

Then there's my main build. And a couple lowbies I have.

But as others have said, multi-classing should be planned, not done on a whim.

And you need to understand how multi-classed casters work.

If you're expecting to cast offensive spells and have them work, you need a very special build for that.

But using your wiz spells for buffs is easy enough.

    Fleshie version: 12 Ranger/7 Wizard/1 Monk

    WF version: 12 Wizard/6 Ranger/2 Monk

I highly recommend the WF version.
