Pertaining to the OP, Rep bloody has little to do ‘bout nothing here…

I speak for myself and I do hope likely others. We tend to actually read a post, digest it and form our own opinion relating it to our experience rather than take verbatim the viewpoint, presentation, dialect or perceived knowledge of the poster nor forbide bearing any real credence to their little green squares. Some people articulate well while others not, does it prove they be more astute or rational on any given subject? Not really, I am sure we weight in factors such as those we have seen eye-to-eye on a matter, those we’ve played with, acquainted, befriended and personalities which attract us and overall respect but over course of time it is your own experience which you use to derive what you decide which is right.

Long story short - amount of rep usually equates pretty much only to 1) ability to post a lot and 2) ability to post comedy.

That being said, the ability to leave a comment with the neg rep is a good idea that I can see considerable value in.

I have encountered several people on here who are nothing but negative and probably have very little positive reputation, THAT IS PART OF REPUTATION.

Reputation is just as much who you are as it is what you contribute.

That is all part of what they CONTRIBUTE to the forums and the community.

Just because you made a wiki or have done something specific to garner a special title doesn't mean your the only people who have contributed. People contribute in different ways and that's what it's all about.

This is a community of REAL people, some good some bad.

If all that matters is your contribution towards the game itself then shut the whole thing down and only allow the developers to post anything.

No, that is reputation to a part (of the forum community.)

The system is self-perpetuating. Those initially popular have a higher sway - first in the form of a higher +, then in the form of an actual -. They then pass the same power to people who they like, coalescing into a natural clique. I do not intend this to sound nefarious or intentionally discriminating: that is just how the mechanism operates. Democracy it certainly is not.

This is why I do not participate (though some folks give rep anyway); I think any reaction or communication is suitable to be added either in the thread, or not at all.

In my experience, 90% of the people with high rep are total ******s anyway, spending all their time giving out regurgitated advice or digital confectionaries & *hugs* on the forum...while being ****poor players the rare occassions they actually log in.
