The problem with that line of reasoning is that many people get flustered at the slight form of disapproval, even when they obviously deserved it. If you don't believe me, start a website with rules enforcing politeness and try to moderate it. A forums is an obvious pick, but anything with user interaction can work.

Another point is that anonymity encourages honesty while revealing the information tends to censor it quite a bit.

That would only increase flame wars. One of the advantages of this system is I can just neg rep someone being an idiot and move on. Needing to publically or privately say they are an idiot will only inflame the situation.

I'm guessing it was satire? My humor tends to go right over heads sometimes, scoring me negative rep.

I think your giving far too much smart credit to people, ive watched people accuse others without even the capability of giving neg rep of doing so. I have been accused by people as well surprisingly so. I know when Ive felt the urge to hit a minus and you know what? most of the time its been in threads that have long since been destroyed by mods because it was obvious trolling flame baiting. Said it before and I'll say it again bullies get it hands down. And when im in a grumpy mood I stay away from repping period unless its mem who makes me laugh and pulls me out and gets the + when I can give it.

Other then that many of us have said and predicted that this system would be a popularity contest, the trouble I see with it is that people (not all) but a lot of them play games to achieve things to feel a sense of self worth. When you have a system where others can judge your worth positively or negatively it just harbors problems. No one wants to feel like they are a pariah especially in a public forum, and with the power to show off being a good forum poster (lots o green bars) vs a bad one (red bars) its easy for people to get emotional and upset behind what they perceive as being judged by others. I have read posts that I did not think should have been negged rep and try to pos rep if its really something ridiculous. But lately ive felt meh about the whole system. I dont think its there to reward constructive helpful people since to me there are many who do contribute both to the game and helping others that are no where near the ranks of commended.

All in all I have a feeling they arent taking this away so people will have to either deal with this the way it is and not let it get to you. Its judgment on a gaming forums for dungeons and dragons, its not like someone of importance is going to look at your bars one day and say "oh I would have given you that ceo position but I see you suck at posting on a game forums so im giving it to someone else."

    Just some food for thought.

No, that is what it is there for in terms of intent. It just does not, nor will, work that way.

    Still, there is an option.

true but I know I personally give more rep to those who give me a chuckle then any other type and while its nice and all it doesnt really help those who actually advise players on builds/the where whys and hows of the game either. Yes eventually those players will garner enough pos rep if they arent arrogant about how they give advice (ive seen plenty of that to and no one likes a know it all who brags period). But point blank a lot of rep given out is due to personality. If your likable enough and say the right thing or post something funny your more likely to hit that high rep level then anything else.

I do like that people who dont contribute who go out their way to flame bait post junk like "THIS GAME SUXORZ" do get negged to the point where they stop posting or shut up. But still I think many understand this system is flawed specially since neg rep can be used as a way of vendetta. Oh that person contradicted me - 1 for him cause I can. Im still wondering if this was a way to help moderate the forums or another "poof sparkles in our faces to distract us" type deal.

The reality is there are more people that can give pos rep than negative. If Borror0 decides she hates me and wants to neg rep me as often as the system allows there are more people in a position to pos rep me and Borror0 won't be able to do much damage to my rep. I have to **** off most of the people before the green line starts going down in any substantial way.

They system probably shouldn't have been implimented, but its not so bad and I do think it actually reduces flame wars.

    nom
It just goes to show the system doesn't work.

The people that break the board rules get high reputations and thus power to spread negative, while those who can obey them completely can be forced to negative, possibly wasting the real moderators time.

Why? Do you expect people would get upset if they realized that 80% of all negative rep is issued by Tarrant and Tolero?

I'm all for removing anonymity as well as enabling the rep-er to leave a comment.

Anonymity is one of the biggest problems on this (or any) forum. Take away that veil and watch people's behavior change instantly.

A few weeks up that question somehow came up in the forums and Borror0 refused to answer, so I'm going with female just for the heck of it
