Books that would make good MMO's

Lots of great suggestions here, but if I had to pick one it would definitively be

The greatest fantasy series written in recent times IMO, with the A Song of Fire and Ice series coming second. Not for you who like Disney-type fantasy though, these books are a bit dark and brutal at times, but fantastic.

The Malazan books did start out as a D&D-campaign, but they switched to the more flexible GURPS.

Agreed. IMO best fantasy series ever penned outside of the Lord of the Rings. And even that is debatable in my mind.

Patrick Rothfuss' Name of the Wind has so much potential as a book series but need to see when the second book comes out. Not as an mmo though - too limiting.

This was on our forum www.unrepentantgaming.org and I think it is a great topic. For those of you that read (i work at an airport, people leave books all over the place) are there any books or series of book that you think could be made into a good MMO. Personally I am surprised that Harry Potter is not an MMO. 4 houses against each other would be cool. Personally the world that R.A. Salvatore has created makes me drool but might be to close to DnD and WoW of course. One of our guild suggested the Wheel of Time books or Discworld. What about the whole Horror fantasy stuff. How come no MMO's there? or a solid Western MMO. What books would make a great mmo for you guys.

I often wish we had a MMO based on the D&D 3.5 game books .

Donaldson's 'Chronicles of Thomas Covenant' both series
Feist's 'Riftwar' series
Lyndon Hardy's 'Master of the Five Magics' and its sequels

Palladium already made a tabletop RPG where you roll up your own mutant, give it characteristics and distribute points using a bastardized palladium dice system choose a disposition alignment etc.

Robotech

Again Palladium made a pen and paper version that enjoyed minor success for a minute.

Wow, scanned the whole thread, lots of cool input but my personal fav,
Gemmel's Drenai saga. Perhaps some of the best fiction in recent memory.
A great world setting, only really lacking in races....

Id love to see the Dragons of Arrongoth series made into an mmo or a single player game of this style. There is just something about the idea of playing A sword wielding dragon in full battle armor taking on imps, trolls, and ogres.

There was a thread like this sometime back. It didn't get a lot of attention, but some of us enjoyed it.

My thoughts are that Piers Anthony's Xanth series, or Adept series would both make excellent fantasy MMO's. Adept would have the added advantage of a game within a game. Both have dragons, and harpys, magic, zombies, and lots and lots of humorous adventure.

OH, and puns, tons of puns!

Glad you mentioned this I personally think it would be so awesome a game world. I just wonder how they would make it so every person has a different magical abilitly!

A lot of great fantasy stuff in here, but personally I'd drool for a real cyberpunk MMO.

Other suggestions:

Baroque cyle by Neil Stephenson (or alternatively, Cryptonomicon)
or the Night Watch-Day Watch-Twilight Watch-Trilogy by Sergej Lukjanenko.
