Default Forget Epic - What about Legendary?

I've been thinking that DDO should have at least one quest that is close to impossible to complete. Something like what I hear the Abbott used to be. But I understand they eventually scaled back the difficulty. Any group (perhaps require it to be a raid) that completes the quest achieves Legendary status. Maybe they could have their name put on a public statue or whatever. In addition, to let people know that the quest had been conquered the death penalty would be removed (does it really effect gameplay anyway?) at least for a certain period of time with a special alert that the death penalty has been temporarily removed as a result of X groups conqueering the Mad Scientist (or whoever). This is just a thought I've had running around in my head and I wondered if this had been done, been considered or what others thought of the idea.

Well, the previous version of the Abbot was terribly bad (and the present one is mildly bad), so a suggestion to make quests function similarly to a terrible one appears inadvisable.

A kind of shared mass buff to announce a raid victory is a reasonable idea, and indeed it has been done in World of Warcraft. For simplest acceptability, it would provide a buff you could get anyway, but without needing to spend the spellpoints/potions.

Sure looks like Turbine has already moved in that direction with the Degenev Brothers and their buffs although theirs is a bit more unique.

I like the idea of a Heroism on all level 10 and under characters, and Greater Heroism on 11+.

But all that said, I'm not so sure I want to see another worldwide event whenever a particular raid is beaten (even a tough one). I've played long enough to remember the world broadcast *every time* the Stormreaver raid was attempted (win or fail) - it was comical the first ten times or so...
    I don't have a zerging problem.

    I'm zerging. That's YOUR problem.

An easy method is to switch the corresponding questgiver into a "victory mode" for X hours, causing him to toss the buff to anyone who comes nearby. That has the additional advantage of only applying to players who have some tangential awareness of the raid, instead of clueless lowbies getting unpredictably buffed for reasons they don't understand.

You'd also want to modify the visual appearance of the questgiver in honor of the celebration, probably by displaying trophies from the vanquished raid boss.

    mmm

    my pick:

Prepatch Desert Caravan - 25 minuits.

All Shrines removed. Cannot use mana pots, rest shrines or any store items.

Mobs hit for 300 per swing. 10K hp each. Wagons are destroyed in 4 hits.

Named bosses that pop up randomly replaced with much more powerful bosses like dragons, pit fiends and a warforged titan at the end - have the dragon one be a rare spawn, but basicly impossible to defeat. All of which are purple named. (regular trash isn't red or purple so CC works)

No getting agro and kiting mobs. XX mobs must be killed every 5 minuits or ancient beholders spawn and decimate the party with mordekainins disjunction followed by DC99 fingers of death for all.

Perhaps convert it to a raid also, add more wagons and more room to move around.

Legendary Defense quest.. The ultimate test of CC, DPS smart use of mana and endurance. No way to cheese thru it.

Reward: Legend status. 5 epic chests which drop already epic items, no need for silly crafting. and 1 legendary chest that drops the ultimate loot.

Only to have some hard working, fantastic team of players figure it out, win and share the strat. It never surpises me how skilled some folks can be at making the impossible possible.

But hell, if you can beat the best of what the Dev's throw at you, you deserve the best of what the game has in rewards.

And within two hours of it coming live on the servers, one guild finds an exploit and beats it, then one guild member teaches the exploit to a 'trusted' PUG. Epic and legendary loot is had by all for seven days, until the quest is nerfed to the point that noone whatsoever wants to set foot into it.

Oh sorry, forgot I wasn't meant to be talking about the Abbot.

initial abbot may have been a fail with all the exploits..

But think back to titan. No one beat that in 2 hours. 2 days, not even 2 weeks.

Make it had enough and QA it well enough on Lamannia and there won't be exploits.

Another way to prevent constant farming of anything meant to be extremely rarely done is to make it non-repeatable. Non-repeatable quests already exist in the game anyways. (Obviously as new content, it should be repeated on a easier setting with lesser rewards, but Legendary mode would be a 1 time event, per character)
