    Thanks guys, I appreciate all of this advice even if some of you guys are arguing over things. That kind of back and forth is actually pretty helpful because some of those same conversations go on in my own head.

    No problem. xP And to make it more clear, if you would not hit a target on a roll of 17 but your weapon has a crit range that crits on 17, it wont threaten a critical. Rather, whenever it does threaten, meeting all the qualifiers (being natural 20 or beating the targets AC in the first place) you will land the attack as a non-crit if you don't confirm sucessfully. That part wasn't in my post because it wasn't really part of the question in my mind but it's probably not harmful to make that side not for knowledge sake.

    So if you roll a 17 in the above scenario....it will not hit. Right?

    Correct, in the example I gave a rolled 17 wouldn't hit at all.
