    Question Roleplayers.. secluded or ashamed?

So I'm wandering around Stormreach yesterday on my level 11 barb, looking for something to do. I decide to head over to the house of twelve and pickup the small ingredient bag that I always seem to forget on every one of my alts, when I stumble across a room full of roleplayers.

I walked over to whatshisface and got my bag, and started panning my camera around to see how many people were in the room, there was at least 20 or more. They were talking as I walked in, and then just stopped, for a good 4 minutes while I stood there rearranging my inventory. I guess they gave up on waiting and then started back up just before I left.

I thought it was kind of funny how they all got quiet and waited for me to leave, but it made me wonder, are roleplayers afraid of being made fun of, or do they generally just like to RP when no one else is around so they don't get interrupted?

    Talking

The traits you mentioned are not mutually exclusive.

They can (and probably are) both.

    Can`t blame them though......wouldn`t you?

Dear Roleplayer: I believe in Equal Opportunity Harrasment, so please for the love of RP`ng do not take offense. If you do...well then thats your problem.

LOL, I don't RP with my characters but I have to say I have not come across anyone who'd openly mock or heckle other players for RP-ing. If there are such players then I pity them for having such tiny wee-wees they have to get their jollies off poking fun at people.

In your scenario maybe they were RP-ing some private event and you being that barbarian (warforged by chance with a giant two-handed axe?) probably just stood out.

lol, yeah, big ole warforged barbarian with a two handed axe strutting through their party. I wonder how they rp stuff like that. Since there is no guild housing to actually have a private meeting, anyone can come stumbling through during an intense moment. They didn't greet me or anything, so I assume they just pretend I wasn't there.

Ugh...yes, guild housing. I remember a brief blurb way way way way back when about the devs talking about putting guild hall/guild housing/personal housing or some such in.

God, that would be so awesome. Of course, now they'd likely make it some expensive item to be bought on the DDO Store.

Obviously they were roleplaying racism. I mean, WF are nothing more than trained killers, right?

I find it ironic in the extreme that people playing a computer game based on a role playing game might feel awkward about role playing in that computer game.

That's like a midget feeling size-conscious among the Oompah Loompahs in Willy Wonka's factory.

Woo! That is the best analogy I have ever read.

I know that when I used to be a part of an RP guild (WAY back in the beginning of DDO) they would do all their RP in guild chat and party chat. I bet that these days with general chat being global and the rather "mature" population that populate that channel the RP's may be less inclinded to RP in the open. Sure, /say is rather local but once anyone of the more "special" individuals catches wind they will likely mock the RPer to no end. I know that was the case quite often when I played WoW.

Although I am not a RP-er in the "stay in character and act" sense of serious role-playing, I still like to have some purpose or meaning for my characters, in terms of alignment, personality, name, etc., even if this meaning exists only in my imagination. I would like to see a lot more consequence and meaning to alignment and moral/ethical choice in this game, to make people play according to their chosen alignment.

I tried roleplaying in this game before but apparently "pure awesome" is not an acceptable format for role playing.
