    Default Dx10.... Again !!!

    My Graphics Card:
Nvidia GeForce9600GT -- has DirectX10.1 -- drivers: 191.07 (the latest as of post)
    (Vista HomePremium)

I cannot enable DirectX10 in game.

I've tried ALL the tips, hints, tricks mentioned in these forums (and a few others).
    NONE of the work.

--> Does anyone know if there is solution to this problem ??!
--> Any known or unknown issues with Nvidia-and-DDO ? DX 10.1 ?? The latest drivers not supprted at this time ???

Yes, I can play the game, and it looks nice in DX9. But I payed for DX10... so I could SEE the game in DX10.

Please, I beg all you smart computer geeks... err, I mean computer genii out there to help !!!

The latest Nvidia drivers (though beta, they're still viable) are actually 195.39. You can try downloading them and giving them a try here:

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_wi...5.39_beta.html

Also, in conjunction with this, I'd recommend (assuming you're not doing this already) manually uninstalling your existing drivers first, and then downloading and running a program like Driver Sweeper that makes sure all the erroneous registry entries and such from older drivers are cleaned out, then doing a shutdown/restart before installing the newest/latest drivers (should be a habit IMO anytime you move to newer drivers)....you can find that one here:

As I have posted elsewhere, my DxDiag is telling me I'm running DirectX11 (!?)
    Don't know how that's possible...

So, now what?? This is very aggravating.

    Can anyone offer solutions/advice ??

If able post a copy of your dxdiag.

Make sure that DDO isn't running in compatibility mode for XP.

First, I greatly appreciate your assistance.

-I've checked all the .exe's and none are in compatibility mode.
-DxDiag for some reason does not allow me to see the code, only a general cover sheet. If there exists some other way to force Dxdiag to show me the code I'm not aware of it.

    Feichang,

    Default correction

System Info → DX version: DX11
Display Devices → DDI version: 9Ex

    Clearly this is a problem.
    Tried something Re:WindowsAero. No success.

    *argh*

"DDI Version: 9Ex" is the most likely culprit, it's referring to a pre-Dx10 directx file.

Try unistalling your drivers and reinstalling them and then updating/reinstalling DirectX via the option here: DirectX Web Installer

Well, I did as advised -- Uninstalled/Reinstalled drivers, updated DirectX, and there is no apparent change. Hmmm...

As I've asked the Support Team and also Mirthgar:
    1. Is it possible the DDI=9Ex is simply overridden by a higher/later DirectX ?
    2. Is it possible that my system forces the game to run in DX10 -- that I've been seeing it in DX10 that whole time and just didn't know it because I have no idea what DX10 is supposed to look like -- that the reason the in-game option-box for DX10 is greyed out is because I simply have no choice but to use DX10 because I cannot "uncheck" it and use a lesser DX version which my graphics card cannot comprehend ???

    My brain hurts now.

Anyway, a big THANK YOU to Mirthgar, TreknaQudane, and Tyndaleon for their help.

Nah, the game client at launch loads the usersettings files to determine the settings for the game to be run at, resolution, sound settings etc.

You could in theory change your UserPreferences.ini to enable DX10, however if the game itself isn't recognizing the card as valid, it most likely wouldn't work.

You would want to change 'GraphicsCore' from D3D9 to D3D10

It may also be worth trying something else...

    In the [Render] section

Change 'HavePromptedForD3D10AtStartup' from True to False.

Dang it !! ....I tried those things already.
UserPreferences always reverts back to D3D9 no matter what I do to it.
And HavePrompted didn't revert but didn't make any difference.

    It must be the gremlins.

Yeah, the gremlins writing the code. I found you a post about this issue: http://forums.xna.com/forums/t/17191.aspx

    See this MS KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939998

Sure, that's Vista, not Win7. Sounds like the exact same issue though: D9ex is reported, when it should be D10.

The proper way for a game to detect DX10 is to try and create a DX10 device. Trying to figure out whether DX10 is supported by reading the DDI version should be considered a bug.

Which means you are out of luck until either a) MS fix their DDI version reporting (good luck) or b) Turbine fix the way they detect DX10.

I'd file a bug report with Turbine.

As an aside - the front page of DXDiag reporting DX11 is not a mistake. DX11 will run (in reduced functionality mode) on DX10 hardware. Nice, huh? You don't get Compute Shader 5, you get 4 or 4.1 depending on DX10 or DX10.1 hardware, you don't get tesselation, and there's a couple other small differences. You still get the multi-core support and such.

Now, granted, from a visual candy perspective, tesselation is the one major new feature in DX11. And from a physics perspective, Compute Shader 5.0 is much nicer than 4.0 or 4.1. Once DDO supports DX11 (sometime Q1, we are told), you can get frustrated all over again about not being able to enable that one either, and decide whether tesselation is enough of a game-changer to buy a DX11 card. At which point your dxdiag will still report D9Ex, just because that's how it rolls, and you'll be really mad.

Also just to toss it out there though it doesn't sound at this point like a driver issue necessarily, there's another newer beta for you to give a go (195.55):

Default I knew it was the GREMLINS !!!

WOW !! Thanx for the research Dasungerheuer! (If my German was better I might actually know what that means...) Should I pay you in large currency, or do you want small unmarked bills ?

So, this, then, is my plan:
    1. File Bug-Report to Turbine.
    2. Have little expectation that they will deign to even consider it.
    3. Learn to love DX9 until such time as my current pc is hopelessly out-of-date.

    ............................

Well, thank-you ALL who've helped me. I gave you all the rep I could muster.
If I hear from Turbine about a fix I will update this post.
Until then, I will consider this discussion tabled.
    *bangs gavel*

That sounds like a plan. Particularly step 3). I'll take a mountain of copper coins, please.

If you do hear from Turbine, or they fix it at some point in the future, let us know!

Oh - "Das Ungeheuer" simply means "the monster". It sounds so much nicer in German, though. It's got a diphthong! (*)

(*) No you can't gird that around your loins.

Apparently your card does not support dx10.1 but does support dx10. Saw it on the nvidia web site and this one:
    http://www.tcmagazine.com/comments.p...=17443&catid=2

Is that enough to stop it from working with DDO? Is DDO dx10.1 only?
Might want to find out from Turbine tech support.

I say hold off until you can get a dx11 capable card from nvidia, which should be out very very soon. ATI has one out already the 5800 series cards are just starting to come out. It's their good model and more affordable versions will be out soon. Q1 2010 i.e. in the first 3 months estimated arrival. They will also come out with their X2 version in December if your motherboard supports the dual GPU's as well as your wallet!
