Portal Beaters

So I'm one of them weird returning players. If they ever fix shroud I may actually be able to start running it! I'm told I need a "portal beater" however.

What is one, and who's got one?

I am a 15 Human True Neutral Greatsword Kensai. Will be swapping to dwarven axes if they ever get reincarnates fixed up though.

What do I need, what do you got, and how many limbs do you want?

Plain ole GCB is ok till you can get something better. Portals take damage from the following off the top of my head.

Pure Good
Anarchic (Burst)
True Chaos
Holy (Burst)
Vicious
Maiming
Bane (GCB>CB>LCB)
Force (There are force weapons now right?)


Most peeps look for 4/5d6 weapons for portals. If no crit effects on the weapon the higher the base damage the better. If nice crit effects on a weapon the lower the threat range is usually the better. You need not be proficient, just need to be able to equip the weapons. Portals have no ac so you will hit on a 2 no matter what. Always use power attack, buffs that help are: bard song, prayer (Not recitation contrary to many n00bs opinions) rage/madstone, rage, damage boosts. Smites will work but wont crit, divine sacrifice same thing works but no crit.....wifes calling for dinner, gl.

Us poor n00bs (well me can't speak for all n00bs) that still cast recitation at the portals, do it for that few extra points of Ac so if some mobs happen to run up I can just keep hitting the portal and not worry about healing anyone.

Part one is long enough with out everyone hitting the bloody things some, right?

Unless someone is about to die. Also it lets me see who is going to be the “problem” in part 4-5. The one that makes me stop killing portals to heal them is going to need extra healing later.

I dont bother with helping anyones ac in pt one. If they are an ac build things shouldnt hit them much, if they arent an ac build +2 wont make a difference. Besides imo the most damage at portals is usually caused by casters.


I dont understand how +2 to ac helps you see who is the problem, but hey, some peeps still diplo chests so to each his own

And i do like 10-20 points of damage a swing should i stop that too?

You can do whatever you want. I never said recitation doesnt help ac, i said it doesnt help damage against portals. Things in shroud 1 normal have around a 42 to hit to start, some a little higher. My ac builds all stand at 55 or better, i just dont waste time buffing ac for portal beating. Im spoiled, most of the time i never see a mob once the first group is cleared, if your in groups where peeps are constantly fighting mobs maby you guys should buff to the hilt IDK.

The point was i was trying to help the op see what helps and what doesnt.

And dont get me wrong, its not like casting recitation takes a bunch of time, but its the precedence it sets, next everyone is asking for bark, ac songs etc, and that leads to a bunch of time consuming buffs.

I don't have any kopeshes and I just like how axes look. I have a +4 holy GS of maiming I've been using as main dps weapon. I'll just keep using that and keep an eye out for those dwarven axes if reincarnate ever comes out. Being true neutral kinda sucks, but this is my original pre-mod 1 and Pure Good 28 point guy. Stability was uber back in the day!

I was planning on hanging out by the Shroud entrance and try mugging people.

The dang thing closed the night after I finally got flagged for it too. I'm pretty sure when I give up and say I didn't want to do Shroud anyway that it will reopen.

Patch on Monday reopens Shroud!
