Default The absolute Max Melee DPS toon...

Now I'm sure this thread may provoke plenty of arguments.. but I'm going to ask anyway. I want to play a melee character that does DPS - nothing else. I want to dominate every enemy I come accross, I want to run out in front of the group like a lunatic hellbent on destroying everything red in my path... I want to one shot everything (or close enough), I want people I group with to say "Save some for me!". I want to swing a massive weapon (or 2) and wreak havoc on anything that dares walk in front of me. I want to click and watch everything die around me.

    So..

Class? Race? Starting Stats? Reasons why?

    Have at it!

    Search based on DPS comparisons.

The problem is that it varies monster by monster what builds are most effective.

Build a WF barbarian. It's as close to an overall DPS machine I can think of. Rogues have massive situational DPS but for sustained DPS this would be my suggestion.

Pure paladin Knight of the Chalice 3, dual wielding Holy Burst silver khopeshes* of Greater Evil Outsider Bane Will demolish most endgame mobs with ease. Somewhat less useful against mobs that aren't evil outsiders.

I'm sure someone can come up with a specific build. I'm also sure someone can come up with something better, tut that's the best I've looked into.

*or (race's favored weapon with full enhancements.)

Warforged Fighter 20. Dual Khopesh Kensai. Power Attack enhancements. Start with 18 str and be able to hit 17 base dex with tomes. The other stats dont matter since all you want is DPS.

The answer is complex. Depending on the nature of the enemy, the answer will differ. There are some excellent posts on these forums comparing the dps stats of all of the various builds and explaining a lot of the differences.

For example, I believe for regular mobs (no fortification or DR or special defenses) a 13/6/1 rouge/ranger/barbarian can put out the most damage--assuming backstabs (so probably attacking with an intim holding agro) and speed boosts (limited in time). If you are fighting an enemy with fortification, constructs, undead, the answer will differ. And so on and so on.

There is no magic single answer.

Bring your checkbook, ALL of the max dps builds are VERY gear heavy. AND most of that gear can't be bought via ingame store.
And as pointed out before, there are several that shine in different situtations.

I'd advise everyone to ignore the posts in this thread up to this point...

They don't meet the requisite amount of biased opinions, assumed "facts", shady "number-crunching", and/or made-up numbers/figures/examples with a side of "new math" - at least not for a "Max Melee DPS" thread.

Actually, the KotC3 DPS paladin that was mentioned can function at a high fraction of his DPS fairly cheaply since Holy Sword is a dead easy to obtain alternative to a couple of min2, comes in both Kopesh and Rapier/Scimi versions and is available as of lvl14 (I think it was at least).

It's a harder build to balance stats on, but building as a drow can get pretty close to optimum without the need to any extravagant tome use... While looking around for a DPS build for my first 28pt toon when coming back to DDO after 3 years away, this and a WF Barb were my first two picks. The barb meant definitely no tomes required for a highest potential DPS THF build, but crafting a min2 falchion (granted, 1 weapon instead of 2 for a TWF, but still) and tons of potions used. The drow TWF means a +1 tome to hit GTWF at some point, and eventually a +1 or +3 for DM3/4, but those will come with in-game currency in time. The availability of the cheap Holy Sword spell granting good DPS for free and easier self-healing was what tipped the scales for me. Rolling both up, but the paladin seems a better fit for someone lacking a regular group, who finds himself soloing/pugging more often than not.

In addition to the DPS builds mentioned by others above (Shredder, Shade's wf barb, KotC pally), there is also "The Monster" build that you should look up.

Man, you will get as many opinions as, well, you know...as to which has more all-out DPS in all situations.

Plus player skill is going to enter into the equation. I mean, ya gotta know when to switch weapons sometimes, based on the enemy, or at least I do.

I followed the Dwarf guide (no warforged for me), and.. ****. What a little juggernaut! I've seen numbers fly off this level 3 barbarian that I can't even touch on my level 12 monk (although my monk hits seventy two billin trillion times faster). But yeh, if you want to see large numbers... that's the plan right there (ok so maybe I deviated a little in the enhancements...). Like I said to my last night's group... I will play this barbarian like a barbarian, that means, if I see a crate, I'm going to smash it, also... everything looks like a crate to me. Crate Smash!

    Search forums.

There are dozens of threads, including ones with sheets of dps numbers comparing every possible 'high dps build'.
