To hear voice chat simple enable voice chat. You won't be able to talk, but you will be able to hear what others say.

I didnt use my mic for the longest time. A few months back I got a RL friend to start playing, and he simply refused to read party chat, so I actually started using VC, instead of having it passively on.

I still rarely talk into it, but my guildies are still shocked when my name lights up green.

short answer: No, not having a Mic will not hamper you in this game. As long as you have sound to hear others you'll be fine.

Well I would say from my experience partying to level 6, 8/10 of the people I have partied with don't have mic's, for the most part that's not a big deal as well, long as they can hear me I'm fine, however. Though I do admit, I am kind of sick of the slow typing rogues lol
