Default Umber Hulks and proposed confusion mechanic

I would really love to see my favorite monster the umber hulk. They are cool for the following reasons:

    1. They can burst out of walls/floors
    2. They are huge
    3. They cause confusion.

Confusion however is problematic because no one wants to lose control over their own character.

So... How it would work is that everyone would look like an umber hulk, friends and foes alike. If a player appears to be an umber hulk he can be damaged by other players who failed their save. Then let the players get confused if the are apt to be.

Awesome! I think that if you fail the save vs confusion when they first pop out, you should see them as a Huge pitcher filled with a red liquid and they should yell "Oh yeah!"

While I love the look of umber hulks, the idea of having another creature that pops in and out of the floor, being unhittable half the time and bugging out whenever things get complicated is somewhat less appealing

Popping in and out of the floor, we have enough of.

They could probably set them up in small alcoves though, concealed by some "destructible wall" (the kind we bash through now, and already exist in the game) which players couldn't target, or notice as any different from the rest of the wall, and which the Umber Hulk could bash it's way out. Once it's out of it's hiding spot, it's out, no more hiding.

I also like the proposed confusion mechanic, sort of flipping a switch on the players' displays that makes all the PC's look like, and be named as an Umber Hulk.

Turning on just enough of the PvP code inside a quest, so the players would actually be able to damage each other, would probably be too tricky, and should probably be avoided anyway.

Maybe just false damage feedback to the PC, so it would appear to a confused PC that they are doing damage, but they actually aren't? Wasting their time attacking a target that's not really a target at all? Would that be enough confusion?

I can imagine healers dumping a lot of SP's healing the damage the Umber Hulk is doing to the party, while the party is not properly focused on destroying the Umber Hulk. Wizards and Sorcerers too, wasting SP's blasting away at nothing they can damage.

Umber Hulks are always scary anyway. I think DDO could use a few more ... startling ... moments. Adding monsters that behave in distinctive ways, is good.
