I posted this in another thread but try killing your Desktop Window Manager service. I think having DX10 enabled will somehow screw things up when the Desktop Window Manager is running. Note that it could also be a combination of DX10 + Vista 32 bit + ATI card....I haven't really checked into it.

This is to solve your first-launch-crash second-launch-successful problem. The first attempted launch may have a problem with the Desktop Window Manager. Windows will, as a result, stop the Desktop Window Manager service. The second attempt will work because the Desktop Window Manager is now stopped.

Take a look at your event log to be sure. This may also lead to the cause of the other problems you are having.



As for your other problems (keep in mind, I just skimmed the threads), it could be a result of heat. I had similar problems on an older machine not long after DDO first released. That machine had an ATI card. I would fire up the ATI monitors and take a look at the temp. in windowed mode. It spiked like crazy. The ATI graphics tests also gave some great indications of the problem as they were replicated outside of DDO with their tools. A slot fan solved my problem....of course, I don't know how you would cure that on a laptop (cooler base maybe?).
