I bought a store copy some time ago, and im trying to use my key and its asking me to sub VIP. Is there any benefit a premium player gets to having bought the game?

The game purchase will get you a month of VIP access, and Premium access after that.
You can either pick a billing plan and add a card, then cancel...
Or you can pick "Game Card or Other Payment Method", then "I dont' have one now, I'll give you one later."
Either of these will keep you from having to pay VIP fees. And you can always change your mind.
