Default Connection failed: There was an error with this connection

This error really got me stumped.

Connection failed: There was an error with this connection

I get it right after i try to login. It brings up the splash screen of the female wizard, then after a couple of seconds. I hear a error beep and go back to the desktop with that error.

I tried reinstalling from the Stormreach cd's when i got the game a few years ago, same connection error

So uninstalled and downloaded the client and tried, same connection error

Both times i even tried turning off vista's firewall, same connection error.

I don't use a router, my cable modem is plugged directly into my PC.

Did multiple restarts, and still same connection error.

I did tracert's and pings. No problems at all with packet loss that would account for this.

So nobody has an answer to this?

After doing noumourus trouble shooting. Its not the launcher this much i believe.

Going through the launcher logs. It is seems that part is atleast successful .

End of the launcher log reads as such

A running game has been found.
    Transition to phase: GameIsRunningControl
The running game client has been terminated.
    Transition to phase: AuthenticationControl
The last played world is Sarlona
Launcher execution ends: 10/23/2009 8:55:54 PM

So i am believing with my limited knowledge here, that its failing to connect to the authentication server, right when it is supposed to show the new screen of it loading the world file information. Which i do see for a split second before the game closes and shows the error.

    Well, OK. Throwing out ideas.

Are you running TDM? If so, have you tried the validate and repair option?

Have you tried installing / using the cleaning tool (second post here) then reinstalling a slipstreamed version (here)of .Net 1.1?

You've mentioned turning off the firewall, but have you kept it on, then refreshed the instances of DDO that show up? What I mean is, remove the current version of DDO that's in the firewall list and Vista firewall should pick up that the new version of DDO wants outgoing connection permission.

Have you tried checking to see if your AV is blocking any type of connection attempt? Along those lines, have you checked your system for viruses / malware that might be interfering?

Have you tried doing a clean boot (i.e. turning off all non-MS programs on startup) to see if any programs are causing a connection conflict?

Since the connections seem to mimic (or so it's been said) file sharing applications, is it possible there's something on the ISP end that's blocking UDP connections on the particular ports requested? I realize that this is something that will be more difficult to figure out. Along with that line of thinking, are you running any file sharing programs in the background or anything else that might want the ports that DDO is looking for?

Are you sure your cable modem is is actually just a modem and not a modem / router combo (i.e. like a 2-Wire modem / router)? Just throwing the idea out there. Are there any updates to the modem that are out there? Could the modem itself not be happy with the connections being attempted?

Do you have a Nforce board? They have a hardware based firewall that can interfere with connection attempts. Do you have anything else that might be doing that?

Are your NIC drivers up to date? OK, this is a long shot but what the heck.

Do you have a friend with an account that they could try on your computer to rule out any account strangeness?
It occurs to me that the dice are being rolled by the same computer that's trying to kill me. It knows all the moves - it's just toying with me.

Problem Identified and Fixed..... This is a Norton Anti-Virus issue
The new DDO client is viewed as a hostile program and automatically blocked by Norton
    Steps to fix
    1. Open your "Norton Internet Security"
    2. Open Firewall "Configuration"
    3. Go to "Programs" tab
    4. Sort through the list till you find the program named "dndclient" set to "Permit All" (the icon on this one is different from the other DDO apps in there

Check all 4 DDO apps make sure they are allowed access
    ddohigh
    ddoclient
tribune launcher ( there are 2 of these)

I;ve got the same problem and none of the above solutions have worked for me. I am running Computer Associates for internet security and I have configured it to allow everything having anything to do with DDO. I still get the same error message any time I get to Authentication.

Uninstalling CA is not an option for me at this time.

Same problem as with Nui. I use CA, I made all the exceptions. Even tried shutting off EVERYTHING CA and Vista in the ways of security, but no go. My Drivers are up to date and I even downloaded the Hi Res of the game, because I can Hi Res most of my other games, but nothing. It kinda sucks.

I just installed the CA security suite, and I'm getting this error as well. I've put exceptions for 'dndclient', 'dndlauncher', 'turbineelevator', 'turbineinvoker', and 'turbinelauncher' in the firewall, and made sure that ports 80 and 9000-9010 were open on my router. Hasn't helped. I have another computer (which is under repairs for hardware failure) that also had CA installed but posed no problem with playing DDO. I've also shut off my firewall in CA and that didn't help either. Any other suggestions?

EDIT: fyi, I don't have windows firewall on. And I've uninstalled and reinstalled DDO to no avail.

Was DDO working before you installed the CA product? If so it has to be a configuration of the CA software.

Have you considered uninstalling it and just using windows firewall if this is a temporary PC?

Thanks for the prompt reply. Yes DDO was working fine (besides overheating, which is due to my laptop's hardware) minutes before I installed CA. As I've said, I disabled CA's firewall, virus scanner, etc. and that didn't help. This is not a temp PC so I would rather not get rid of CA entirely. I'm going to contact their support to see if they have a solution. If push comes to shove, I'll just reinstall Ubuntu and play DDO from there (though then I'll have no voice chat, it seems computers like to malfunction around me or something ;-) ). If I find anything out, I'll post it up here.

CA Tech support should be able to assist.

I take it you don't wish to simply rely on the Windows firewall product?

Is Inbound and Outbound access for those files enabled in the CA firewall?

The procedure for unblocking and making an app trusted and safeapp in CA is:

I'm getting the same error, but I'm not using CA, or Norton.

This error has been showing up since '09? Wait...I searched these forums for this topic, before I started my own thread. And this thread DID NOT show up. Replies listed for Jan '11, I went back on dates that "matched" my search as far as Jan '10, nothing. I searched for "Game Error" "Connection Failed" and others, nothing matched exactly.

Not that any of the fixes listed help me, tried everything listed, but calling and *****ing out Comcast for blocking my fun. YET!!!! Willing to try everything possible, first.

The built-in Windows Firewall can also cause it, and is even more of a pain than Norton or CA.
