What makes an elite player?

i want to throw two concepts:

leader vs player
is an elite player necessarily a good leader?
i believe a good player and a good leader require different qualities. an elite player is not necessarily a good leader. There is one elite player with uber toons in my guild who doesn't like to lead (although, when he is leading, he does it well). A good leader needs to know quests very well, know about different classes and the party members, know about and able to determine suitable strategies and tactics, able to communicate and gain the trust from the party, and ultimately lead the party to win. A good player does not need that any leadership quality. He only need to do his role exceptionally.

when a elite player is control a gimp'd toon (say, logged in a friend's account), is he still an elite player?
i believe an elite player can fully utilize the potential of any toon. He knows the game mechanism and quests very well, and have experience in different situations, so he knows what to do in what situation. A good toon only need to have a sensible build and good gears.

Ive played with a lot of people over the years who I thought were elite...and even more who thought THEY were elite.

To me, an elite player is pieces of what everyone has said...calm, can think outside of the box when something doesnt go according to plan, is willing to help as well as stand to the side and let others learn without dictating to them how to do something.

Very few elite players would be that way without the people they play with...but they come in two varieties...the ones who are elite and can do everything by themselves, but are fun to laugh with and those who can do it by themselves, but know how to work in a group as well and are fun to laugh with

I have always maintained that GEAR makes things easier, it doesnt make it possible for the most part...a truly elite player can and often does succeed with any weapon or a build that is "not optimal"....that said, the really elite players often DO have great gear and great builds...the first because they've done everything (more than once) and the second because they understand what they want a character to be able to do and how certain stats/skills/or feats will enhance that goal.

P.S. An elite player may be a good leader...but Ive met alot over the years who dont LIKE to lead unless forced to by situation.

That seems to be the case with most of the people I know who are good leaders (both in DDO and IRL).

There are many different directions and views one can from to deem an Elite player.

I personally prefer this:

"A player that makes me go 'wow, that was fun' and makes me look eagerly to the next time I can play again"

Technical know how is fine, skill is fine, leadership is fine. But someone that makes me enjoy the game more and makes me look forward to playing again is a rare find. And when it comes down to it, enjoying the game is what we should be here for.
