I don't think auras have anything to do with it, I crash when soloing on characters without auras. I modded a Catalyst driver to work with a Mobility card and updated the driver. My son and I both crashed when blindness effects were removed from us. It happens when you shrine or try to attack.

The lack of progress or communication from Turbine is discouraging.

In an effort at information collection regarding this, if you are getting a unique CTD anytime you encounter Mephits that cast 'blindness', sleet storm or other aoe root/blind effects please post with the following information:
    • What type of Mephit? (Air, Ice etc)
Any that use confusion or blindness effects, or sleet storm. Usually Greater Ice Mephit but Maruts that use Lightning Blindness crash me too.
    • Where were you when you crashed? (quest area, world location etc)
I can duplicate this crash any time I want by trying to solo the Scorching Caverns (Taming the Flames in House K). I crash in any instance that involves the problematic spell effects.
    • Does the game only seem to CTD in these specific times or does it CTD/Crash anywhere else at all?
This crash is 100% predictable. I never crash randomly, only after getting hit with certain spell effects. I generally have time to warn my party that I will be crashing soon.

  4. Does anything you do/have done, or carried remedy the CTD?
God I wish. I'll try blindness immunity I suppose.
  5. Have you tried reinstalling the game?
    No
  6. Have you recently updated or reinstalled your graphics/sound card drivers at all?
    No
  7. Are you using "Turbine Download Manager" (TDM) or a standard install and if TDM have you tried a "Validate & Repair"?
    Not TDM
  8. Does lowering the in-game Options Menu > Graphics to "Very Low" and under Troubleshoot lowering the Engine Speed" to "Very Low" have any effect?
    No
  9. EDIT ADD: Are you in First or Third person when this happens? (If one does the other have any effect?) Probably 3rd person, but it doesn't seem to matter.
  10. Please keep your post confined to the information gathering responses above, no "yeah that happens to me too!" or other post replies please..

I want to describe the behavior in case this helps anyone find a resolution.

Previously the spell Sleet Storm caused a crash. I have not seen this as much recently, although I can't tell if it is because fewer mobs are using the spell. It does seem like they toned down the 'whiteout' effect.
Mephits also cast a kind of blindness that I call "Confusion Blindness". It wears off after a while but I am never fast enough to catch the name of the particular spell. It is a black darkening of the screen.
Maruts and Storm Giants cast a lightning effect that can cause blindness, a solid white screen effect. This also wears off after time.
Shamans and Mummys and other mobs that use the permanent Blindness spell will also crash me shortly after REMOVING the blindness.

This crash does NOT occur immediately upon getting the spell effect. In fact, the actual CTD is triggered by some later interaction, it could be a zone transition, opening a chest, healing someone, attacking a mob, using an item clicky, casting a spell, etc. HOWEVER, it is entirely predictable that some future action will cause a crash AFTER getting hit with the spell effect. In fact, I now try to crash myself if we are out of combat, by casting spells, using wands, etc. Crashing in combat means coming back to a soul stone most of the time (and forget about soloing anything with mephits)

This obviously only affects certain client configurations as I pretty much crash every time it happens, but I have grouped with folks who do not crash when they get blinded.

UPDATE: I fought the Marut in Made to Order last night with Blindness Immunity Goggles and DID NOT crash after getting hit with the lightning. Guess these things are stuck to my face now, just like Freedom of Movement is permanently memorized. Please fix this so I don't have to work around this bug with gear and mana, as there is a definite opportunity cost to dodging the bug this way.

But see that's something odd if it was client configuration. I was leading some groups last night on my Wizard. Sleet storm the cleric we had would CTD in both Gwylan's Stand and Caged Trolls when we did them. Now normally I CTD due to sleet storm on my Paladin, but on my wizard I could stand it in cast walk in and out of it casting spells attacking the enemies perfectly fine. But if it was my paladin the moment I step out of a Sleet storm and swing my great sword I'll CTD.

I actually tested if it was the melee factor on my wizard as I ran up to something after getting out of sleet storm and swung his two scepters at something, and whoa and behold...no CTD. I don't understand how 1 of my 4 characters on the same client, same settings, same computer crash to this.

Makes me feel like this isn't something that we can do to resolve on our own.

    Second this request...

I'm getting close to Shroud crafting for my Bard and I would like to make him some nice goggles. But, if this problem is likely to continue for the foreseeable future, I need to leave that spot open for Blindness Immunity goggles.

OK, it's at least still on thier radar screen. Is there some kind of additional help or info we can provide? Has Turbine at least been able to reproduce the error?

I've been wondering if it's a memory issue. I have a lot of hotbars on all my characters and I notice that sometime the pop-up description for items doesn't show up on some bars. If I keep playing a while they will often start coming up again. Anyone else here experiencing that?

I don't think it's an aura issue since all my characters CTD and most don't have auras. Daehawk does your paladin have a lot of items on his hotbars? I'm trying to see if we can figure out what the common factor is. I can't help much because I haven't found a character of mine that does NOT experience this issue.

All of my characters use about 18-20 Hotbars active on the screen with different gear sets and abilities on them. Only difference other than Auras on my other characters is my Paladin is Human, my other 3 are Drows.

I had another crash after leaving a glitterdust effect. Usually that does NOT crash my client.

Thanks, I saw that...was just hoping you guys had made some progress over the last month and maybe saw light at the end of the bug hunting tunnel.

Oh well...at least the Jester's FoM treats make it easier to deal with the sleetstorm crashes.

This is very interesting information, especially since when I compare client config details in the dxdiag reports I see things like:

    Intel and AMD
    Nvidia and ATI
    Creative and On-board sound
    XP and Vista
and so on... nothing to link us all under the same machine configuration.

However, I can say that my two main characters (the ones where I've definitely crashed) are a male human Cleric and a male human Paladin. I wonder if the character configuration has anything to do with the problem. I haven't paid so much attention to whether my Rogue or Bard Drow alts have encountered this issue, but one of them can probably hop into a mephit-laden fight by now, so I'll try it and see what happens.

Scorching Caverns, Taming the Flames, Greater Air Mephit did the disorientation blindness on my male Drow Ranger/Rogue/Fighter

And again in the Scorching Caverns (this is so easy to repro, those mephits use that confusion blindness pretty reliably)

7 weeks of "data collection" and not a clue as to how to fix it. thanks for the support. If I was free to play, I'd just say "you get what you pay for"-- but I'm paying for this.

Been looking at this since July, so Turbine got their last dime out of me. Account is getting cancelled and I'll discourage anyone and everyone I know from picking up a Turbine game. Pure and simple. This **** been taking MUCH too long!

Sadly I have to agree with you. This is a bad stain on an otherwise great game. Maybe update 2 has a fix? At least they could tell us if they have a clue how to fix this.

My son and I both crashed durng glitterdust today. VERY VERY VERY annoying. (When we logged back in we were both dead.) The glitterdust is strange... sometimes it causes a CTD and other times it does not.

I spend too much time relogging and hitting rez shrines and repairing eqipment. I'm not going to waste time with further bug reports and log captures.

Glitterdust has save for blinding effect, if you fail -> blind -> crash. At least in my case. Made character who can cast FOM and wearing blindness ward goggles all the time eliminated crashing completely.
