Default I am not a (insert insult here)

First off to all the new players who are honestly trying to learn this game and have fun, welcome to Khyber my rant is not directed at you in anyway shape or form. I have met many very nice people who I am looking so forward to playing with. I have even recruited a few of you into my little guild because you made such an impression with me in General/Advice chat. The normal decent players by far outnumber the idiotsticks. I sincerely hope you are able to ignore the bull**** and stick with the game.

That being said since DDO has gone Free 2 Play I have been helping as much as my health will allow. I have spent hours in Korthos and the Harbor to the point where I have not even yet looked at the new content. For my efforts I have been called every name in the book and some words I had never even considered pairing together. All this just for answering questions!! Add to it the veteran players who seem to get a kick out of griefing new players, when they get called on it also act like children calling me everything they can think of and then some. If any of my kids even remotely acted the way several of these players are I would have kicked some serious butt and they would definitely know they had made a mistake.

I was called childish, immature and told to grow up because I corrected someone in general chat for telling new players on korthos to /death to see how many times they have died. This same player than told me he had been playing DDO for 5 years (ya right learn to count) and couldn't wait to get to lvl 8 so he could leave all these useless players behind. Come on people /death is funny in group with players who have been around a bit but it's extremely cruel to a new player who has only been in game for a few hours. This player stated he was doing them a favor by showing them how mean people were in the game and that they should learn now instead of later. What a way to make them feel welcomed and to help retain players. Sure lets insult them and take advantage of new players because they are worthless and need to be driven away. Bull. And it wasn't just this one vet it is happening over and over and over again. I guess since they can hide behind a new characters name they figured they can do whatever the f* they want.

Oh and who gives a sh*t if someone's spelling/grammar is incorrect. There are language barriers in some cases these players are doing their best they do not need to be insulted. Or how about those with Dyslexia and other learning disabilities. They are not stupid and they are trying their best. Heck even I myself have been guilty of making several errors and not rereading before I hit enter. It happens. Players are constantly being teased and picked on for friggin spelling mistakes. That is so wrong. Stop being so anal for crying out loud and let others just enjoy the game without being policed for their english skills.

We now have new players who are giving bad advice in channel. When they are corrected on it start slinging insults etc. Sheesh I wasn't trying to bruise your egos only to make sure the player asking the question received the correct information. Trust me if I had wanted to personally attack you I would have done a **** good job of it. I don't care what the players handbook says this is DDO it is based on pnp but does not follow it to the letter far from it.

Oh btw I know it is just a game but my idea of a game does not include insults and rude behaviour. The squelch list is only so big. DDO saved my life and sanity when I was in a very bad place in my life. For that I will always be grateful. I have tried my best over the years to give back to the game by helping others. As a result I am very passionate about this game. It helped give me my life back. I used to hope the community wouldn't change after it went F2P.. I still do but that hope is wearing rather thin.

I know many of you will tell me to ignore it, to let it roll off my back, to not take it seriously and to a large extent I do but I am not talking here about one or two incidences but literally hundreds and believe it or not it is worse now than it was the first week after launch. It seems the real nasties have now decided to give DDO a try. The first few weeks most of the players were people who were honestly curious about the game. This recent group of players must be spawned straight from hell.

Ya I know shut up and just ignore it. Well too bad. I believe I have earned the right to rant a little bit. I don't need to be calm and level headed all the time. I am also human and have the right to spout off when I feel the need to. Besides this is Khyber and it's about friggin time I added to the drama don't you think?

BTW I will be taking a break for a few days from general chat and advice channel before I really do bite someone's head off and spit them out into little pieces. I know when I have reached my limit and it has been reached. I'll be helping in help channel but that's it for a while until my sanity returns.

I'm going to head out now and scream all those words that George Carlin once said could not be repeated on TV. I have a feeling it will make me feel much better.

    Cool I feel you brother!

Nice post...i to have been trying to help new players who are willing to listen. It is tough and I can only take so much before I need to stay away.
Take a day or two off and come back fresh. If you even help one person to get into the game with some good advice, you have done more than many.

Mate you sound a bit repressed to me. Guess this is part of you process, but I think you need to let of some steam in-game. And what better way than Noob-baiting .

Slinging insults is a bit uncool. but as to the whole /death thing, it was midly amusing once or twice, and I doubt finding yourself back in the bar once is going to put anyone off the game - if it is, then there are probably 100 other things that means they wont last long.

This is the large reason why I disable general chat, but stay on the help channel and advice & trade. The **** that gets spammed on a regular basis is ridiculous.

I can't even imagine what it's been like in korthos. I was in and out of there so fast on my FvS I didn't get a chance to really read anything put into general.

The stuff I have read in General and even the advice channel is a bit off. I am not on a lowbie at all times, but I have rolled up 4 new char's since launch because I like to experiment and hate to re-roll. I've read some stuff that is just flat out wrong and other things that are silly. I try to help out when i see an answer, but there are other times I just look and shake my head at some of the things being sent in general. I've since just started sending /t's instead of responding in general. It's my hope that the people that recieve those /t's will take them as genuine help. Maybe if you are receiving a lot of grief in general, I'd reccomend just reporting the idiot, and keeping it in /t's vs sending in general chat. I am glad you posted this though. Hopefully some of the other vets will try to help put out a better community image than many of the newcomers have shown. The community here is one of the best things I can think of here. I guess it's up to us to keep it that way....

I agree some awnsers to new players in the general chat/advice channel are sometimes quite rude and unneeded. I awnser some questions and more than once, after my awnser, the new player send me tells and I help more and gives more informations on what they need to know. About the /death command, I never found it funny and doing it on new players is just hurting DDO as a game.

Ahh /death is really funny.. but only when you know the correct result and do it intentionally

It also helps me make my Death Quota..

but yeah tricking new players into doing /death is not funny...especially if they have just made it to the harbor and havent bound any where yet and have to trek back from korthos.. besides the item damage if it isn't done in a tavern..

I've been trying to help too, but there are only so many times in one day that I'm willing to tell people that bonuses typically do not stack in this game.

Many, many questions that are being asked have answers that depend on the build people are trying to make. For instance: "Is Strength better then Dexterity?" Apart from the questioner's ignorance of the English language where the difference between the terms 'then' and 'than' is concerned, it depends on the build, in almost every case.

A few of my characters have left the Advice Channel in frustration.

I answer questions in general and advice when I feel like it and don't when I don't.

Mythe of course goes above and beyond and answers questions for hours.

IN the end, the good will outweigh the bad when these people start buying TPs and getting turbine to release some new content! heh.

Fishing for N00Bs is fun! Get an old Birthday Cake with a Djinni still there...call it up and watch them dance when they talk to it!

I must confess it wasn't my idea to begin with, but I had such fun with it I needed to make it more public.

    *sigh*

I only play practical jokes on guildies... be least that way is accepted as such rather then some stranger being mean... although I've not done so in quite some time.

I always liked the genie trick - had used it once on a newbie guildie... stating that the quest giver summoned him and you must talk to him now to advance the quest.

The other thing is, I don't remember asking as many questions as the new players seem to be. In general, my questions were "how do I get to the quest?" and "do I have a special assignment or am I just killing things?".

I think perhaps part of the reason is that we only had 10 levels back then, and a lot less content. There were only two or so places outside of the city/houses: 3BC and TR. No PrEs... hell, only 4 enhancements at a time, remember? Apparently the game has become much more complicated, but since we grew with it, it never seemed like a big mystery.

Disclaimer: hopped up on cold meds
The game has expanded and be more complex... not to mention when we were newbie, we were all newbie... should you fire up a newbie question would be a newbie answer in return. The chat back then was more attune socializing then it be querey and frustration.

Can a Canadian chick, groovy grandma get an "Amen" from a Southern-Fried Jew-boy in Tennessee? You bet she can!

    AMEN!

Talish, I fully understand your frustration. I have not been able to be on much lately due to my own health issues, but when I am online I try to help out as well and have noticed the same thing. For years you've been helping folks out, and since Aundair merged into Khyber I have tried to do my part as well together with you, whether it was monitoring the /help userchannel or making sure that Mythe had her cupboards full for donations to new players and if anyone has earned the right to "take a moment" and let our community have it, it is you.

Many of us old vets cherish and admire you so much that it is appalling to me to read of vet folks being nasty. I was briefly online the other night when you had a conversation with one genleman in /help...but I logged off before I thought of sending you a /tell. Anyway, there are a number of us vets who have your back, just remember that and keep that chin up.

The worst part of the new players is that there are so many who wear their ignorance like a badge. Last week, there was someone in /Advice who was trying to tell people that a melee character will do more damage than a caster.
