Default Door in Proof is in the Poison

Hello all, there is a door 2-3 minutes into this quest that no one in my party was able to open. It is just past a walkway that features jets of fire, and each of us received messages saying we're not strong enough to bash it down. (Hopefully that is enough information to identify it.)

Usually when these messages appear, we just bash on the door anyway and are eventually able to destroy it, or else we just forget about the door and perhaps miss out on the optional area behind it. But this time, getting past the strength door seems to be a requirement for continuing the quest.

My question is, how should a party of low-strength characters best get past this door? Are there particular low-level spells for damaging doors? Can one hire a high-strength hireling and have him bash it down? Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.

Fireball will break down Doors. A Wizard can take that spell at Level 5.

that door can be picked by anyone with a rogue level and some theives tools IIRC. You can also drag a quickfoot fighter type near it, shield block next to the door, and they can bash it down for you.

Knock (even in scroll form) might also work.

UNless you meet the STR minimum for such a door (or runes later on) you cannot get past it by simple bashing. In this case that door just leads to another room with a few mobs and not much else so no loss.

There are very few quests where you absolutely need to have a superior stat to complete the quest (and even then, the requirements on normal at not THAT high). Often with just a magic enhancement item (up to +6) or a stat potion (a flat +4 bonus of the same type as items so they do not add) you can hit the required numbers.

Even then, there are som special alchemitical potions that you can get from collectible turn ins to the collectors at the top of the tower in House D, that can give an Alchemtical bonus of up to +3 more (depending on the rarity of the collectible).

We must have missed a passage somewhere then, because that door was the only way we could find to proceed with the quest.

There is a hallway full of spiders and spiderwebs. Might be easy to miss unless you look at the minimap, and then your movement options become a lot more clear.

    Default no, you're right

That door is the only way forward. I think the previous poster may have confused this with a different quest.

it's got two ways to bash it down: strength of a certain amount (bulls strength potion/scroll/spell may work, depending on how far off your strongest character is).

Fireball works, for sure. But I am pretty sure burning hands works as well.

Rogue picking will NOT work on that door. I was flummoxed by this one back when I tried to solo it as well, on my low str rogue. I ended up getting a hireling sorc/wizard to come in and cast burning hands (I am PRETTY sure it was burning hands and not fireball).

So, yes, it would be impossible to go forward IF:

    1. no one in your party has strength enough (buffed) to knock it down.

    2. no one in your party can cast burning hands, either with spell, scroll, or wand or clicky.

Most parties have EITHER a strong guy or a caster with access to such a spell. And like I said, hirelings are useful in this regard.

To everyone: this is the space just past the firetrapped walkway. There's a wooden door to the side, which is full of spiders, and then snakes back around to the rest of the dungeon. I have run this quest multiple times. I am pretty sure there's no other way of progressing forward. Am I wrong?

Zen I am almost certain you have to knock down the door to get to the spiders. Will doublecheck later on unless you want to?

    Ok just went back in...

After you cross the brigde and get past a few hall guards, you hit the area in question.

I thought I recalled there being a door leading to what is now an Alcove with a few thieves (including an orange named one this time), and the map shows what should be some hidden rooms, but nothing is there.

Just past that is the door in question. Like all doors of that nature, it can be beaten down with enough strength, or via some damaging spells. Ah well...this old farts memory is fading on some details it appears...

(not sure the STR needed, but it tends to be around 18 for most doors like that.) If you have a cleric along, perhaps if they focus a spell like Bull's Strength that might be enough.

Thanks for the tips, guys. FYI, I tried a burning hands clickie (level 1) and it took the door down in one casting.

    Default Yes, yay clickies

    Thanks, Zen

Also, not relevant for this particular quest, but if one is grouping with people who aren't arcanes or rogues, if you ever happen upon a Detect Secret Doors clicky, that's a very handy thing to have.

Great for soloing. And when you don't have a rogue/caster, it will open up a lot more options for you.
(I don't mem the spell on my arcanes, but make sure they all have at least one such wand. Secret doors aren't usually necessary for completion, but they DO make completion easier in many cases (i.e., they often hide shrines).

Apologies for thread necromancy, but I was stuck on this. Turns out flame strike will work as well.

Default Don't need strength or spells. Ranged attacks work.

Adding an update here, because the door can be broken down very easily by any character regardless of ability scores, and neither this thread nor the wiki or any other source seems to know this.

Hit the door with three ranged attacks (thrown, bow, or crossbow) and it breaks. Every time.

    You're welcome.

To be clear - this is the door, on the right at the end of that first hall past the fire-bridge, that leads to the webbed spider hallway? Or is it after that? (Asking so I can fix this in Wiki entry)

It's mentioned in a few quests within the DDO Wiki if you bother to go hunting deep enough.

    See: https://ddowiki.com/page/Update_46_P...dventure_Areas

For example it might explain alternatively a thrown weapon also would work, without the need to reach a specific 'Minimum Strength' requirement, etc., for certain "breakable" doors. The Xorian Cipher, comes to my mind for obvious reasons, where it briefly touches upon such "bypass" mechanics. If anything those specific changes in [U46.2] is short-sightedness from the Developers'.

    Yes that's the door.

There is also a door in another low-level quest somewhere that works the same, but it's an optional area, and I can't remember which quest. I'm levelling 17 new alts at the moment, so I'll find it eventually.
