    Default Fighter/Wizard

Thinking about a multiclass but haven't come up with him yet. Want a fighter/melee type with a spell user. I have some questions:

1 Would it be better for a Fighter/Rogue/ranger?
2 Which would be better Sorc or Wiz?
    3 Which order Spell/melee or melee/spell?
4 What race would be best for the character?

Another question is if sorc/wiz last what armor and weapons are usable

Thanks for any help in making this decision.

I know you said multiclass, but just wondering if you would consider a battlecleric or even a warchanter bard.

Both can be pretty respectable melee characters and fit the bill on casting.

Each offer different things. Fighter gets you more feats and +STR (other enhancements as well). Ranger helps with TWF and if you push it you get tempest. Rogue gives UMD, sneak attack, and Evasion. Any can fit in the right build, you just have to decide what you want first.

2 Which would be better Sorc or Wiz?
Wiz gives you access to spells faster as well as more slots. If you are feat starved (and these builds often are), it also gives you free metamagics. Sorc gives a lot more spell points, which is something I've always liked.

    3 Which order Spell/melee or melee/spell?
When it comes to saves/SR, you don't really have the option to be a hybrid. Either you focus on those things pretty much to the exclusion of other stuff, or they suffer a lot (I guess they suffer anyway). So if that's what you mean by "spell," then I would posit that going spell/melee would result in a largely ineffective character. Melee/spells on the other hand works well if you devote most of your stats to the melee portion and then just understand that the spells you cast will not be offensive ones with saves/SR.

4 What race would be best for the character?
Having played 2 of these, I wouldn't go with anything but WF. Self healing makes you are real beast, and the CON boost is great too. You can certainly succeed as another race, but you may have a harder time with groups. If you always play with a guild and the healers are cool with your concept though, go with whatever you want.

The effective ways to do that is to have 17-20 wizard levels combined with 1-3 levels of fighter, ranger, rogue, or monk. And it is good for the character to be a Warforged.

If you haven't looked closely at the game you might expect that splitting at 14/6, 10/10, or 5/15 might make sense... but they don't. Caster spells are better the more caster levels you have, and missing out on more than a couple caster levels makes it nonworthwhile.

A pure wiz20 can actually be adequate in melee if he spends feats on it, and he hasn't sacrificed any caster level...

I'm actually thinking of building one of these soon.
Inspired by Monkeyarcher's spellsword: 17/2/1 wizard, rogue, barb.
Stats are tight so ended up with:
    16 str
    8 dex
    16 con
    18 intel
    6 wis
    6 cha

All level up points into intel.

With this build I think its important to go for max intel, who knows what the next mod will bring.
With stat points being limited I would say monk isn't a good choice for splash.
With Dex being an 8 and insightful reflexes I would say ranger isn't a good choice either.

He will be THF WF build, skill points in the following:
    UMD, Intimidate and balance.

Rouge makes sense for umd and evasion (among other nice additions). I'm not so sure about the barb yet. What sets the barb above the others for this build?
