    Default Question about Summon Monster

Hey all, I have been beating my head against the wall on this, in regards to the Summon Monster Spell. According to the material I have read, you should be able to summon the monster where your cursor is located as long as you don't have anything targetted and not have it summon next to you. I am attempting the Shadow Mage type of soloing as made famous by Ghoste, but I can't get this to function for me. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Do you mean it always get summoned next to you even if you are targetting another place?
This is weird, it should work. It may have to do with some targetting options. Try disabling the mouse soft targetting and/or the auto-targetting, see if it makes a difference.

    I just tested this out.

It doesn't seem to work for me either.

Summoned monster appears next to me.

It works just fine for me; in fact I used it last night to drop a Hezrou on the orange beholder in new invasion. Have nothing targeted and aim your target reticule at your target and cast the spell. It will appear where your target is aimed.

For reference I have soft and auto-targets disabled.

Another random hypothesis I can't test right now: maybe all Summon Monster spells are not coded the same in this regard.

Summon Monster has shortesh range. If you're targeted past that range the monster tends to show up next to you rather than between you and the target. The only real exception I've found is if you're targeting beneath you. The summoned will sometimes appear in midair and drop down.

Thanks for the feedback, I went back in and disabled all soft and auto-targeting and initially it still wasn't working, but I think I have figured out the trick.

You have to have a target, but it can't be targetted. Meaning you can't just have the cursor out on the ground somewhere. You have to have a target that causes your cursor to change. When you do that, whether it be a barrel or a monster, the summon monster does indead appear next to your target and not next to you. It has a pretty good range too I might add. Thanks for all the feed back.

I usually switch to mouse look mode by pressing the T key, and then put the little circle in the center where I want my pet to be summoned. Works everytime unless what I'm pointing at is out of range, which then causes it to be summoned at my feet.

Soft targeting really screws this up.

    Turn it off.

    Select yourself "F1"
Hit escape to make sure your target window is clear.
Turn on Mouse Look mode so you can see the little curse to tell exactly where you are looking.
Put the mouse look curser where you want to summon your pet.

You can no wturn off mouse look if desired, but make sure to not change your veiwing angle or move.

    Cat your spell (scroll)(item)

As soon as the casting animation starts, you can then move and it will not effect where the pet appears. I use this to sidestep back behind cover, so that when the casting animation stops, and I pop out of stealth mode, I will be out of line of sight from the bad guys. (a Ghoste trick)

Pretty sure this still works, but make sure soft targetting is off.
Any error in this process will screw it up.

That should not be necessary. I usually summon while aiming at plain ground.

I'm a little confused, and I thought maybe it was how I have my UI settings.

I knew about using mouselook to summon at a distance, but I thought this thread was about summoning at a distance from the regular cursor.Which I'm not sure is possible.

Can anyone add anything more about that part?

It is not possible to summon at the arrow cursor/regular cursor. Only where your target reticule is (e.g. mouselook mode). If you switch out of mouselook, the last position will be the summoned monsters location provided you have nothing targeted in your target focus.
