Default Game freezing and graphics glitches

Well, my laptop was fixed so I don't have to play on the desktop that was giving me this problem: http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=200785

But now I have some problems on this laptop with an ATI card. I tried updating the driver and applying the ATI 9.9 hotfix. Issues still persist.

It is a Vista 32 bit system.

    Issues:
    1. (minor) starting the game using the D&D Online desktop shortcut causes the game to immediately crash. A second start works.
    2. (persistent and annoying) When loading an instance some objects will flicker very quickly. Changing the triple buffering or sync with refresh rate options temporarily fix the issue, but loading another area can bring it back regardless of the option state. Also bank tabs or item descriptions can flicker quickly.
    3. (game stopper) Often upon zoning or loading and instance or in a graphic-intensive fight, the screen will freeze. The cursor is still active but no motion is seen. Alt-F4 is unresponsive. I can usually cntrl-alt-delete and when the task manager comes up i can get ddo to close. Gianthold public area is a common freeze point.

Can I please get a Turbine Support response to this?
I'm a VIP who has been playing for three years, but since Mod 9 I cannot avoid crashes, even on a $5000 laptop. It is somewhat annoying and I would appreciate some help.

Try disabling "Vista Aero" and enabling "Vista Basic" (steps below) this is a known focus issue with DX10 enabled games and Vista, you can also try clicking on the black screen that comes up to try keeping the game screen in focus.
    • Right-click the desktop choose "Personalize" > Window Color and Appearance" > "Open classic appearance properties...."
    • In the menu that comes up click on "Windows Vista Basic" and click Ok.

I would definitely look into updating those, that being said though there are some reports of issues with the latest Catalyst drivers affecting DDO and other games that use Direct3d so you may want to look for the 9.7's if possible.

The best bet with a mobile card like this is to check with the PC maker's site first (ie Alienware) for updates.

    Thanks, Mirthgar.
I did try to install the Alienware driver update previously. I had problems installing, so I called Alienware support and wethought the driver did install after a restart. I tried installing the ATI 9.9 update later.
I'll give the alienware install another try.

I tried the 9.1 catalyst drivers. I also tried the options setting listed in this post: http://forums.ddo.com/showpost.php?p...31&postcount=5

I've been posting in this thread and trying the suggestions there: http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=201293

    I'm still experiencing freezing.

Is there any solution to this problem?

I would definitely follow up with a tech ticket if you haven't yet, it may need more in-depth troubleshooting than can be done here on the forums.

Thanks for the follow-up and the link, Mirthgar. I had considered a tech ticket but have not sent one in yet.

Right now I'm trying disabling the ATI high definition audio. I also have someone from Alienware's CEO office who's aware of the issue. Since DDO is free to play, he can try testing the drivers. I've given him the links to these threads.

I'm still getting freezes about five times per day. It happens the first time I load a character into gianthold, battlefield, or necropolis too. It still happens with mephits as well. I also have some characters that never get new mail notification.

I've put it two tech tickets. It's been a few days with no reply.

This is very frustrating. Is there anything else I can do?

    Angry

I finally got a reply to my tech ticket:

I am a VIP. Are they telling me they will not provide support? It is frustrating enough having trouble running the game and now I have trouble placing a ticket when I follow the instructions given. I have been a loyal customer since beta.

    Help please?

I checked your tickets the reply you received was for the issue with the in-game mail, that is definitley something to follow up with in-game support about as they can verify alot more than tech can in terms of checking the mail status of the affected characters etc.

Per the crashing you mentioned sleet storm and blindness effects and that is something we're following up with the engineers about. Since you put in two separate incidents you may be getting another reply from your tech ticket about that as well.

    Thank you very much Mirthgar.

I just recieved another response and I will provide tech support with the requested files.

As a suggestion, it would be useful for the e-mails from tech support to include some details of the ticket that was submitted. The title of the ticket (brief description of the problem), at a minimum, would help to avoid confusion.

    Thanks again!

    Greetings, rfachini!

Can you provide more detail regarding the in-game issue you are having, so that we can investigate further?

    Thanks!

See this thread for some of my previous posts: http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=201293

    As a short summary:
For the flickering issue, I often have objects flicker when I load an inn or other instance. I can click syc to refresh rate (toggle it on or off to get the screen to reload) to stop the flickering. It is annoying, but doesn't crash the game.

Sometimes when I load an inn or a large area (necropolis and gianthold are major culprits) the screen freezes. I can still move my mouse but no matter how long I wait, the game video does not start moving. When I use cnrtl-alt-delete, even if I cancel and do not start the task manager, DDO will crash. I don't have any other way to stop the frozen state-- alt-f4 does not work, nor is alt-tab or alt-enter responsive.

Thanks for any help you can provide, and please let me know if you have any questions.

    Default Freezing

I have exactly the same problem

The screen freezes, mouse is available but that is it. Then the only option left is to shut the game down using Task Manager.

I have an ATI Radeon 4800 series card with the 9.7 drivers on a Vista 64 machine.

It happens so often and seemingly without any trigger (e.g. town instances, mass spell effects etc).

Okay, let me clarify here. Mirthgar can help with all technical issues - such as issues with your video like this. I can help you with in-game issues, such as a mail issue that was alluded to. Let me know on that whether or not you're still experiencing problems, so that I can take a look.

I apologize for the confusion... and any frustration. But, we'll do everything we can to get to the bottom of the issues for you just as quickly as possible. And I will redirect Mirthgar to this thread for follow up on the video issue for both of you.

Go to My Documents > Dungeons & Dragons Online > double click "UserPrefernces.ini"
    Change:

    [Render]
    GraphicsCore=D3D9 (instead of D3D10)

X out the text window, it should prompt you to Save.

    See if that helps.
