I'd like this feature to be turned off too. There may be quite a few various reasons. But simply said, I do not want it to work for me. I feel absolutely no need in this, and I do not want to be listed in any of those databases. Privacy wise, I know that the game is completely Turbine's, but the created character is something that completely belongs to the player, since there is player's imagination, luck, and opportunity involved (non-transferred asset). I don't want this asset of mine being put out on the window without my permission. And I don't feel like sharing that with anyone. Some things I want to share is jokes, laughs over the game, and the character is of no factor here.
Also I feel that making characters visible may bring this game unwanted elitism culture. I don't think that uber gear will make people play better. When I look for party, I don't care what gear they have, but when I recognise someone I might say 'Hey, I ran with this guy and we got wiped, but we had a hell of a fun time'.
My two cents. Might be a bit off the topic, ranting a little bit, but the bottom line says LET ME TURN IT OFF/ON WHENEVER I WANT.

I get where you are coming from - but sadly it all belongs to Turbine, so we are pretty much helpless here.

Creation is not something that belongs to Turbine. Each unique character is personal belonging of the person involved in shaping. Think of it as OEM. You use stuff others made, but the whole package is legitimally yours. I bet there's a specific law for that.

I would also like an opt out for characters rather than just the anon system. Some people may not like others seeing their gear, stats, play times (by seeing when they complete quests) or level ups.

You are incorrect - you signed away all rights when you agreed to the terms and conditions for using the software and accessing their servers.
