    Default Attack bonus WAI?

Trying this here to see if I get a better response

I read the release notes and maybe I missed something.

This first came up tonight when a friend was telling me something wasnt right when his unbuffed attack bonus was much higher than it should be. He thought maybe a new piece of loot was bugged and giving him a bonus it shouldnt have.

Upon further inspection on my lowbie it seems the attack bonus, which increases with your attack chain, gets stuck on which ever part of the chain you are on. So I smack a mob a few times and as I progress my attack bonus goes up. Then that mob dies halfway through the chain. I run along for a little bit, start smacking a new mob, and my first swings attack bonus is through the roof. It also shows on the inventory details sheet like this. Is this correct? I thought the attack bonus should reset with your attack chain.

    Good thinking!

They won't back it out because they know we don't like it...

...but if they find out we're getting an unintended advantage? Maaaan, that **** will be gone lickety-split.

Cthulhu commends thee for figuring out what was causing the aforementioned anomaly.

I wondered why my rogue had +41 to hit while sitting unbuffed in the tavern

I saw this happening on my level 4 bard. He had a +22 to hit showing up when I opened the inventory panel. i think its just a display bug because I watched my dice roll icon the next time I attacked and it only showed +10 to the roll, which is what my base +hit value is.

I noticed this too. My Paladin was sitting at +5 to hit over where I thought he would be.
I figured it was from the +5/+10 to attacks in the back end of the chain.
I'm still completely in the dark about why the attacks get that bonus though.

In D&D attack progressions when from highest to lowest during a round. Ie you got your first swing at +13, your second swing at +8 and your third at +3 for example. Works fine in a turn based game. In a Real Time Game, if this progression would followed, it was found to be very easy to constantly reset/restart the attack chain by moving (twitching) right after you first swing. So Swing at +13, move a smidge, swing at +13, move a smidge again, and so on and so forth and never stand still long enough to get your lower to hit chances.

With increasing progressions, that gives you an incentive to achieve a good location and continue swinging away, and removes the systemic advantage those with superior twitch skills would otherwise get. (Good twitch skills are still extremely useful however for many many other reasons in this Real Time Combat Sim.)

    That kind of makes sense.
Wouldn't it be easier to put a time restraint on resetting back to the BAB swing though?
So, say you've got a +11/+6/+1 BAB and a 1.5 second swing speed (only have a 3.0 PHB to hand and coming fresh from WoW, so apologies if there's a systems clash there, and I believe the combat system here speeds up as your BAB increases to represent the more attacks per round, but it works well enough as a hypothetical), you either stand still and swing at +11 on 0 seconds, +6 on 1.5, +1 on 3, then +11 again on 4.5, or you swing at +11 on 0, twitch and jump around, but unless your next attack doesn't swing until at least 4.5 then you swing at +6.
