    Default Some newb questions

I am enjoying my lowly level 1 sorc, but I have some questions. My guy is a human sorc, 18 CHA, 14 CON, 12 INT. 10 DEX, I think. I took Niacs and Charm Person as my first spells; Charm is a hoot. Anyway, my questions:

    1. Twice I've been defeated by entangling spider bosses in Solo adventures -- once by Kraak, the boss in the underground complex on Korthos Island, and once by a spider boss in the Misery level 2 quest (which I foolishly tried at level 1). These guys web me, and I don't seem to be able to cast, much less run. How does one deal with this? Dodge and weave so they don't hit me in the first place? Is there some resistance potion or something I can drink to help? I notice I kept failing un-web saves, but I wasn't sure which stat it involved -- DEX? Should I bring along a hireling instead? Of course I might group with guildies, but partly I want to learn how to handle stuff solo, as guildies aren't always around, and I like soloing in general.

    2. Any general advice on Enhancements? I haven't chosen any yet.

    3. I'm close to leveling. Any thoughts on the next spell for me? I love Niacs, but some mobs are immune to cold. On the other hand, Hypnotize sounds fun.

Soloing with a new Sorc can be pretty hard. You are better off trying to get into a group, even if it's only 2 or 3 of you, and being more of a support role for the first few levels. Charm is a good spell for all the big mobs of Kobolds you'll encounter, so is Hypnotism. I find burning hands to be a little more useful then Nica's, although Nica's is more powerful it seems to fail a lot more often, and can be used on the mobs that you've hypnotized.

You'll find that as you go up in level you will feel less squishy and you will begin to compete with the Fighters and Barbarians for kills once you get to level 7.

I love playing a Sorc, have fun and enjoy!

Thanks for your replies. Yep, I've already spent a lot of time studying Aspenor's thread; my build reflects several of his recommendations. And yes, grouping makes things easier. I grouped with guildies today and finished one of the quests that had me stuck (and made level 2, yay!). But I would also like to learn solo tactics to deal with things like snaring spiders, because guildies aren't always around, and because I enjoy the challenge of soloing.

First off, I would suggest you improve your reflex save. Failing that,.....

Monsters in DDO never went to physics class. With ranged physical effects, they do not understand that a moving target needs to be led. Consequently, they will never hit a target moving transverse to them unless very close. This is true for the lowly spider firing webs to the nasty high level Abbot Lich firing disintegration.

Move transverse to your target while they fire at you and you will never be hit. P.S. also works against enemy archers. If you have the room, you can circle your target at a safe distance at any speed and fire spells at them without worry of being hit. Another tactic involves moving left then back to right (repeat as necessary). Don't feel bad mate, the majority of high level sorcs have not seemed to catch onto this fact either.

Welcome to the world of sorcerers where, getting held is probably the number one way to die. Learn to avoid and buff important saves to avoid this most dangerous event. If your dex is 8 (a poor idea), make sure you never get hit with web. Because with a low strength, you may be stuck a while.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I'm learning to stay on the move. One further question about that: if I cast while moving, does that damage my chances to hit? Probably not if I'm using Magic Missile or Burning Hands; probably so if I'm using Niacs, since I never went to physics class either. But does the game impose any penalty on casting-while-moving in addition to my own failings as a gunslinger?

My DEX is 10, and I haven't done much to improve my reflex saves, although I have been maxing my Jump skill, and Jumping seems to help me avoid stuff. I do recall that I had the option to choose a reflex-save item as loot once, and I chose a CHA item instead. I will keep my eyes open for other reflex-save gear.

web's first save is a reflex and then a strength save to break out of it. If your starting str is 8 that is why you are having such a hard time getting out of it.

If you can't find an answer to any other questions and if you feel embarrassed feel free to PM me any questions you have I tend to frequent the forums a bunch and check it often

I've improved my reflex-save some, and I'm getting better at strafing; my latest encounters with webbing spiders haven't been deadly. But yeah, STR is an issue for me. I guess I'll be on the lookout for STR potions or items.
