Default 1st Post - 1st Day, Probably my last...

I am new to DDO - I am an old guy who played in the 70's and still have my books, but just never found the time to play DDO. So I downloaded it, and fired it up - only to have intermittent freezing and lock ups, which require a hard boot of my system to escape. Check the forums and alas - it isn't a new problem... I am not going to flame anyone, I just wanted to say thank you to all the posters who helped ID the issue and possible solutions - I tried most of them, but they didn't work for me - and I do not want to have to hard boot my rig just to play a game. So thanks to you all, you input was valuable - but just didn't work for me!

I've replaced my video card and most things run much smoother now.

There have been two exceptions: Demigod and DDO. For Demigod I found that the solution was to turn off the sound via a "/nosound" command.

Is there something similar with DDO?

Yea same problem here sudden development of stuttering and freezing. Quit a year ago using XP (ran no problem). Now came back with a Alienware Vista Operating system and 2 4850 ati cards. Also have SoundMax Blackhawk. Seems to me that a conflict is between the Blackhawk and ATI HD Audio Device (or maybe with the ATI device solely). In the past had to fudge the Blackhawk to run speakers correctly now seems fine since turning of ATI sound driver. I have no freezes and little stuttering (I think it may be on Turbines end). Im running on very high settings and 1600 x 1200 resolution. No problem switching back and forth or running multiple programs with DDO. Im using catalyst version 9.12. Driver update 10.2 is available as well from ATI. Also I am no computer pro so if my computer jargon is wrong or incorrect that's why. I'm just letting you all know what helped me.

ok removed and reinstalled driver 10.2. Game runs flawlessly (no freezes or stuttering) left audio driver alone (turned on after driver update) and works perfect. Just FYI get catalyst 10.2 driver at AMD.com. Hope it helps .

"Me-2" - constant crashes with 9.10, resolved with 10.2. ATI's stability focus on 10.2 (and 10.3 to come) is paying off!

FYI the freezing came back when the egg hunt was introduced. This is also happening for at least one other guildie with an ATI card. It also shows it has something to do with the DDO game version/update.

I'm running on a laptop so I'm trying to hold out for the official Catalyst 10.3 release which has Mobility support.

    Default ATi Card

Just general advice from a new ATI card owner, and old timer DDO player...

I'm running a new system with an ATI 5870 (up from 2x 9600GT SLI), and I will give the same advice to anybody with an ATI card : you should limit your FPS to 65. (or 120FPS for 120FPS displays), not much use getting more FPS than your monitor can display.

Limiting your FPS goes a LONG way to eliminating stutter in DDO with ANY card. Had the same issue with my SLI 2x9600GT until I locked my max FPS to 65.

Helps keep your card running cooler too since it is not running at 100%.

Also V-Sync works great for me in DDO.

Whether to use 10.2 may depend on your needs. I installed the 10.2 driver shortly after it came out. I reinstalled my Cat 9.8 within hours for a couple of reasons. First, 10.2 has several problems, including it won't run NWN and KotOR, they crash immediately. This has been acknowledged on AMD's forums. Also, when corresponding with my card's manufacturer, they recommended using the Cat 9.8 since it was their best driver for Windows XP.

Just a heads up on possible problems.

I agree. There is a problem with the DDO code. My problem of the video signal being lost (black screen but audio still working lockups) at random times has only occurred in DDO.

I had this issue and managed to resolve it in the following manner:

    1. booted into safe mode and uninstalled my ATI drivers (Deleting local files) via device manager.
    2. booted back into normal, allowed autodetect of drivers to occur but did not reboot following auto-detect
    3. reinstalled ATI 10.2 catalyst drivers
    4. reboot

No more crashes .. prior it was crashing after 10-20 seconds of game play.. I read on the ATI forums that a windows 7 update broke the drivers somewhere..

Default How to cap your FPS to relieve your Video Card

Quote Originally Posted by Magusrex777 View Post

Ok, to limit your FPS to a reasonable limit, do the following :

Go to the "Options" menu and select "Troubleshoot". In the Troubleshoot Menu, the first item will be "Maximum Frame Rate" with a slider bar to adjust your FPS. I would suggest limiting it to +/-65 FPS (or 30 FPS for systems which attain lower fps). That will cap your FPS and go a LONG way to reducing stuttering and also lowering the heat your video card will give off since it is now not running at 100% all the time. It doesn't seem to matter what card you have.

    Hope this helps people!

PS This is what Turbine support sent my today
PPS All turbine games should be given free to graphics support devs at ATI etc...
    ---------------------------------------------
    Greetings Dave,

Thank you for contacting Turbine support. We have been receiving reports from players that the newer Catalyst drivers (9.9 and 9.8) have been causing crashing in Direct3d games and that rolling back to an earlier stable release has remedied this in most instances.

Also please attempt the steps below:

Please open the folder “Documents” > “Dungeons and Dragons Online” and in there open the “Userpreferences.ini” file and make the following changes in the [Display] section:

    Change "AllowFakeFullScreen=True" to False
    Change "SyncToRefresh=False" to True
Verify that the number following "Resolution=" matches your current Windows desktop resolution.
Change "Antialiasing=" to Disabled if set to 2x/4x etc. (eg. Antialiasing=Disabled )

Exit the file and choose yes when prompted to save prior to launching the game to test these settings. Additional settings changes can be made from the in-game Options menu. Under "ADV Graphics" disable the "Player Mesh Combining" option and lower the "Player Crowd Quality Control" slider to 0. Under Audio if currently using Hardware mode, change this to Software and in the Troubleshoot section lower the Engine Speed and set the Maximum Frames Per Second slider to 57.

    Thank you,
    The Turbine Customer Service Team

    PROBLEM FIXED
ATI High Definition Audio Device -> DISABLED from device manager - this got rid of the stuttering -
Installed Catalyst 9.7 ATI drivers (as a turbine tech support guy suggested in another thread) - this got rid of freezing -

    INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLING NEW DRIVERS:

use the uninstall utility wich comes with the driver installer file: launch the installer -> let it copy the files -> choose uninstall -> custom -> select everything)
    2- Reboot your system
3- (optional) run a driver cleaner program (like drivercleaner) to clear the system for any leftover of previous installations -> Reboot
    4- Install the "new" drivers
    5- Reboot again
6- Your computer is now running cleanly installed video drivers (this apply for every kind of drivers thou)

    (thanks Snowine for the link)

The combination of these two posts solved my problem and I am not sure which did it. I had the screen lock where I could still hear and play but see nothing AT LEAST once per hour. It has not happened once in 3 days now of extensive playing. It used to happen in LOTRO too. I followed the instructions and downloaded 9.7 for 64 bit. Still had the problem. Set frame rate to 57 and Under "ADV Graphics" disable the "Player Mesh Combining" option and lower the "Player Crowd Quality Control" slider to 0. Under Audio if currently using Hardware mode, change this to Software and in the Troubleshoot section lower the Engine Speed and set the Maximum Frames Per Second slider to 57. I also disabled HDMI in the device manager but I never had stuttering issues so I dont know but I don't need. I am SOOO HAPPY now. everything else is on max except stenciled shadow is disabled and not using AA. AA will bring back problems but I was never using AA and was still having problems. I am afraid to try 10.2 becuase 9.7 is working I am guessing 10.2 would work... I have ATI 4850 btw. I never had a problem in anything but LOTRO and DDO.

I installed a Radeon HD 4670 (my old Geforce broke down) on the day update 7 came online.

I installed the latest drivers, nevertheless im getting random crashes.
PC freezes and a reboot is the only option.

Ive tried to reinstall the drivers...
Ive read on the ATI forum that 'Rivatuner' which keeps the clockspeed at 750 mhz could be the solution, it isn't...

I also bought the citybuilder game Cities XL 2011 a few days ago which is running great on my machine

Ive never experienced any hardware problems with DDO, please advise..

Someone suggested to try the older 9.12 Catalyst drivers, so I did.

Same story, the game gets uber laggy after 15 or so minutes and then totally freezes (including sound).

Starting to think its Turbine's problem.
They really have to start testing update 7 with older Radeon cards (HD 4600 series)

Ever since I started playing DDO shortly before it went free to play, I was having an intermittent problem where I would lose the video signal (screen would go black) but I could still hear the game sounds and move my character according to friends. I had to hard boot to recover. Sometimes it would happen several times in one day, and then go a few weeks before occurring again. I only saw the problem in DDO for almost a year, until it happened one day in Rise of Nations.

FWIW, I replaced my Sapphire HD3650 with an HIS HD4670 AGP card this month, after getting Sapphire's support to say it sounded like a hardware problem. BTW, I don't recommend Sapphire.

I installed the Catalyst 10.9 AGP Hotfix drivers on the new card. At the risk of jinxing it, the problem has not reoccurred since. *crosses fingers*

At this point, I'm not sure if it's a hardware, driver, or application problem, or some combination of these.

Sapphire cards are great, all mine still work.

The REAL trick is DON'T USE THE ATI DRIVER UPDATES.

I have a new PCIe HD 4350. I use the disk It came with no problem.

I update the drivers and it's BSoD time.

(mostly cause the ATI drivers are generic and not specifically for your card.)

granted 'cause its a new card the disk is pretty up do date while with older cards they wont be.

I have tried nearly everything listed in here adn even some of just screwing around in the option settings, all with no effect, stuttering is worse. I can ease it to almost not there if i have it set on very low, but where is the fun in that. Graphics that makes me want to puke. Im a little upset that i have not heard back from turbine, and my guildies with the problem are out in the dark since they arent getting a response either. But i have uninstalled drivers, reboot, install driver, disable hd sound, and etc. Nothing had an effect until i uninstalled the DDO game and then reinstalled it. it last two days then right in the middle of the game it went back to being a stuttering p.o.s.
The really odd thing that i Cant figure out is that all the other games ive tested run just fine, but DDO wont and if I alt tab to desktop my desktop runs really slow, Its taking up about 66% of physical memory.
My laptop isnt a slouch either.
