    Default New to game

Hello all. I am completely new to this game. First I started with being a paladin. Quite boring for me. I then created a wizard and decide to go on the path of necromancer. I am quite enjoying the game very much now that I have a bit of a challenge. unfortunately I am aware that I am a noob and do not know enough about my character. So I come before you all to ask of help. I would like to know what is with the scroll inscribe on my toolbar and what is its purpose. I also would like to know what is with components. Finally, do I have to make spells for my individual class, or do I just pick and choose them while I gain levels in the game. If you could be so kind and give me the information I seek, I would be greatly happy and will enjoy the game even more. Also any suggestions and other knowledge pertaining to my class would be great as well. Thank you.

you can learn (choose) new spells as you go up in level but as a wizard only:

when you get to stormreach city itself you can buy inscribing tools which allow you to learn new spells.

    you need

The inscribing tools at the appropriate level of the spell so level 1 for magic missile
An arcane scroll of the spell i.e magic missile scroll
    Press your button 'scroll inscribe'

    Job done

    yuo have learnt a spell.

some spells need ingredients to cast them. you can't cast them unless you have the ingredient in your pack or a feat allows you to bypass this need.

    have fun

Since you are a wizard you have the ability to learn spells from scrolls that you come across or buy. If you pick up an arcane scroll and you don't have that spell in your spell book you can learn the spell (assuming you are of the appropriate level).

First you need to purchase inscription materials. These can be found at most arcane vendors. Find the one that goes with your scroll. This can be determined by looking at the caster level of the scroll.

Scroll caster level 1 = lvl 1 inscription materials.
Scroll caster level 3 = lvl 2 inscription materials.
Scroll caster level 5 = lvl 3 inscription materials.
    etc...

Once you have the inscription materials in your inventory, equip the scroll by dragging it to your main hand in your inventory. Click on the inscribe button and after a few seconds the spell will be added your spell book. The next time you rest or visit a tavern you can memorize the spell.

Some spells require material components. Each level has a specific type of components, so just buy a stack of components for the spell levels that you have and be sure to check them every now and again to make sure that you don't run out.

The most used components will be your 3rd level ones because of haste

Being a wizard you have two methods of learning spells. One is through inscribing scrolls and the other is by leveling up. Each time that you gain a level you will be able to choose 2 spells to add to your repertoire.

Playing a spell caster at lower levels is rough, but once you hit level 7 you will be able to learn one of the most powerful spells in the game; Wall of Fire. At level 5 be sure to choose haste as one of your spells and the melee in your group will love you long time.

A wizard has a smaller spell point pool in comparison to a sorceror so choose your targets wisely.

As a wizard you also will learn free metamagic feats every 5 levels, meaning that you can use your other feats on stuff like spell penetration. Just remember this when choosing your feats.

One correction -- level doesn't matter when scribing scrolls.

So long as you have the inscription materials and a scroll, you can put it into your spellbook, even if you are level 1 and you want to inscribe Meteor Swarm. Note that you can't actually view your list of higher level spells scribed in this way, however.

Yeah, now that I understand it I am wandering around looking for some nice useful scrolls. I am doing well since your advice. I just hit lvl 3 and found my copper sigil. I am liking this game a lot. I really like being able to switch armor and weapons to make myself more deadly.

as a wizard you have to be careful with armor.

    There are 2 seperate problems

You have no arnor profiencies so unless you are qweraing robes or an outfit you will get penalties to skills and actual AC

Second armor has arcane spell failure, which means if you are wearing armor and casting there is a chance your spell will fail. Each armor type has a different percentage of failure and it will be marked on the armor description.

As you get higher level you will understand how to avoid damage by using spells like stoneskin, blur, displacement and elemental resists. Trying to get a decent AC on a spellcaster is very difficult
