    Default Leveling and multiclassing

Stupid question! I've been searching around the forums but I can't seem to find it as it's probably self explanitory in game...

The problem is I don't want to progress without my brother who i'll be playing along side later tonight. Just trying to plan ahead so I don't have to recreate later!

Anyways my question is w've played a couple quests thusfar, and I've noticed there's rank systems along side the level system. The question is do I need to get all the level 1 ranks before multiclassing? How exactly does it work. I get level 1 rank 4, then multiclass into say a cleric, get rank 4 then switch back? Sorry I'm uber nub pro

I hope that question even made sense...

Once you gain the 5th rank of a level, your experience bar changes color from purple to blue, signifying that you can train the next level next time you talk to a trainer. If you want to multiclass, you can do so at that time, by talking to a trainer of the new class. Keep in mind, however, that once you have leveled up, it's permanent. You can't go back to being single-classed. You can take more levels of the original class if you choose, but only after you gain another level's worth of experience.

Hey man, I wouldn't multiclass fighter if I were you in a ranger.
Rangers can also be quite effective Melee combatants as well as ranged, due to gaining the Two Weapon fighting feats for free as they level.
The only thing you would get out of a multiclass with a fighter would be some extra feats basically.

It all depends on what your build is though, on how effective you would be in melee vs ranged. If there are issues there due to really low strength, those issues will be there with a fighter level as well.

If you are a Dex based ranger (which for bow usage I assume you are) you could consider taking weapon finesse and using rapiers/shortswords to improve your to hit with finesse-able weapons.

Multiclassing will also stop you from getting the Ranger capstone, which in your case might be worthwhile as a pure archer.

Rangers are not automatically bow-users. They actually get huge bonuses to melee, and a PrC devoted to two weapon fighting. Ranger does not mean ranged, it means to range all over the countryside...

Rangers can make more melee DPS than fighters depending on build/player/gear....

Fighters can be almost anything they want. Based on the huge offering of feats available to them they can actually make better archers than rangers do.

Check this link for some new player friendly builds.

On a different note. At this point in time Ranger 20 can only gain a capstone enhancement aimed a ranged rangers. If you don't intent to stay with ranged (IE you're succumbing to the evils of the dual wielding mêlée) and aren't worried about future capstone, two levels of another class might be beneficial. (Usually two Monk or two Fighter for feats and other perks.)

you would have to choose which of the three classes you want to level up by going to that trainer.

Enhancments are choosable from any of your trainers, and should all be available.

Skill point gains and which are class skills and crossclass skills go by the class that gains the level.
