Does it matter which alignment you take or not? I am confused as to what alignment to take. This is my first toon that I am customizing so I want to do it right

True Neutral seems to be the Alignment of choice for caster types. You lose out on Pure Good weapons, and a few special named items, but frankly as a Cleric (provided you're not gearing up to be a battlecleric), you don't really need them.
Bonuses - Anti-Good, Anti-Law, Anti-Chaos spells won't touch you. You can use Taint of Evil items. You can cast Chaos hammer, Smite Evil, and Order's Wrath (as well as any other alignment based spells I'm unaware of) without restriction. You can benefit from Stability and Greater Stability enhancements (which are rare, but VERY handy at low level, and frankly not too shabby at mid-high level either). You can use Holy, Unholy, Anarchic(sp?) and Axiomatic weapons freely.
Cons - You miss out on a few lawful/chaotic/good only items (mostly weapons), none of which you really need. You cannot multiclass to bard, barbarian or Paladin (Boo-frikkin-hoo :P)
Bards require non-lawful as do barbians. Paladins have to be lawful good and I think Monks require Lawful.
But other then that... yeah he is right.
