    Default Let Arlos Die

For anyone not familiar, Warterworks part 2 has been changed. When you speak to Arlos in the prison, he does not teleport away. Instead, he has to physically walk to the exit.

This would not be a problem, except that he is a bloodthirsty idiot. I recently attempted to solo the quest. I spoke to Arlos, but rather than attempt to follow me, he started punching a kobold who had been happily hypnotized. I clicked to talk to him again and selected the 'Come with me if you want to live' option. Rather than follow, he continued to attack random kobolds.

It gets worse. I leveled up, upgraded my gear, and retried the quest, taking the time to hold the right click button until the swarms of kobolds were dead. So Arlos and I are jogging toward the exit, but look! Down that side passage! It's that chef at the beginning, whom I had run past, because he was at the far end of a hallway and never posed a threat!

Naturally, Arlos decided that fighting the chef was more important than escaping, and that he, the guy without a weapon or armor, should be the one to grab the aggro. Thanks to Fascinate, Charm, and wands of Cure Light Wounds, Arlos survived, but I have to wonder at the fact that we had that fight at all.

Given that it's a jailbreak quest, it's in the spirit of the scenario that we should flee from the sewers, hundreds of kobolds at our backs. If Arlos doesn't want to play along, that should be his problem, not mine. I'm sure I could tell Guard Tember some story about how Arlos died heroically, fighting his way through a swarm of kobolds, and how I arrived but a moment too late, and how it was tragic and he was a hero and bla bla bla, and Guard Tember would eat it with a spoon, and every time I passed by Arlos' memorial, I would snicker about how Arlos was an idiot who had it coming.

That, or the AI could be fixed so that he could follow me peacefully.

Or, if this is supposed to be a role-playing experience where it's just in Arlos' character that he refuses to leave without punching kobolds, then I should be allowed to beat him unconscious and carry him out.

In any event, Arlos has achieved a new kind of obnoxious.

P.S.: I am glad that the devs are trying different things. That whole thing about having to gather your whole party at the exit was arguably more obnoxious. This new source of annoyance only really matters if you're not running a typical kill-everything party.

Arlos is the new Coyle. The dev's official answer was "why don't you kill everything in the dungeon before freeing him".

Too bad you can't cast Blindness on Arlos. It would stop him from aggroing things.

I do not want him fixed, I like your alternative more...sorry, he fought bravely but by the time I got there...It would certainly add some spice to a stroy-line that has been unaltered since inception.

Its not too bad just kill everything in the area and on the way back to the entrance. Talk to Arlos and have him follow you on your merry way

Yes, I know I can wait to talk to him, but either of these options, especially the second, would be far more fun! (He followed me up into a nook when I broke a box and then he got stuck there because he couldn't jump off the bigger box. Dumb*ss. On the positive side, though, I put in a help desk ticket and got a GM response within two minutes - they seem to have really amped up the gm staff )

come on... the dev's had to take some heat off coyle for being the most annoying stupidest npc in the game...

i mean, annoying is just putting it mildly for trying to kill an iron golem while coyle keeps throwing scorching rays at it and healing it

Although, i do like the idea you have here... and in true roleplaying, i wouldnt smack him unconsious (i usually play a psion) i would brain lock him instead

As for the change, I really don't mind it. A two minute speed run of that part of the quest was pretty silly, imho. Granted, I'm not a superzerger by nature. However, killing everything on that side of the map is not hard - nor does it take long. Making sure the path is clear, and not running him near any boxes seems to work well, for me at least.

I think the biggest problem here is the culture-shock of such a major way to how that quest has been run vs. how it now has to be run.

Well if you're gonna nitpick, in Irestone there is a COOK, not a CHEF. The only chef I can remember seeing recently was in the new lowbie series in Repossesion

One of my friends made a chef class in PnP a long time ago when we were kids. It was really a spoof of some caster classes, and featured spells called PEPPER SPRAY, SALT STORM, etc. The worst was "Knives and Salt", which had a hail of knives come down on the target(s), followed by loads of salt....ouch!!

"You must not leave till you free Arlos, knock him unconcious and gather your party safely at the exit" sound like a winner to me!
