Game Causes System Restart

so i start the game up and any time that i try to change any sort of graphics or play the game it will restart my computer without me doing anything i could handle it booting me back to the desktop but it restarts my computer and i only get to play for about 1 - 2 minutes before it does this. anyone with ideas please help

Since September 1st, the game freezes for several seconds every time I react quickly [which usually means in the middle of battle...

], sometimes when I'm not doing anything at all, ie: standing still at the AH and once, all I was doing was running a lowbie up some stairs in the Marketplace.

Then yesterday, out of nowhere, my pc started rebooting intermittently while in-game, always giving the 'windows didn't shut down properly' message. I removed and re-downloaded the game overnight, hoping that would fix my woes, but alas.

My system is only 6 months old, with sufficient resources. DDO ran just fine until the new launch...

Some guidance would be appreciated.

Post your dxdiag's when you get a chance (how to steps are in the "how to get help.." sticky linked in my sig)

Also if you have "Turbine Download Manager" (TDM) installed try running the "Validate & Repair" from the options menu.
If it keeps up definitely open a support request.

Thanks for the direction, Mirthgar. dxdiag attached below.

When I re-downloaded last night, I didn't use the TDM since I didn't need to get in-game quickly. But back on September 1st:

When I was installing the patch the data set got corrupted so I had to start over from scratch and...
I used the TDM but still couldn't get in, so...
I ran the validate and repair. It took an additional two hours but I was able to get in to the game and...
that's when the freezing up for several seconds started. It wasn't until yesterday that the rebooting while in-game began.

Should I uninstall and try again with the TDM?

edit: 9-14-09: Over the weekend, since I couldn't really play, I decided to see if there were any variables I could eliminate. First, I installed a Call of Duty 4 and my husband ran it for a while, focusing on sudden direction changes, etc... the pc never rebooted, froze up, etc. Then, yesterday, I downloaded a f2p game [dungeon runners] and played it for a bit to see if the pc would do the rebooting thing... I learned two things from that excercise: 1) the pc only has the multiple-second freeze problem and the intermittant reboot problem while I'm in DDO, and 2) I will not be playing Dungeon Runners on any regular basis. DDO has spoiled me.

Hi, I was wondering if this issue is fixed for you now that several days have passed and you have had ample time to play the game and see whether the intermittent reboots cropped up again.

If you have not experienced any further forced reboots I would be eager to hear about the exact adjustments you had to make to the userpreferences.ini document as I am currently having the same issue and I am rather stumped since it does not appear to be related to overheating or memory problems.
I can run significantly more taxing games than DDO without issue, and just by scanning the Technical Assistance forum I can see multiple threads about issues that sound very similar to what you and I are experiencing. Unfortunately none that I can see have a clearly listed cause and resolution.

I await any aid that can be given to me since I don't even have a good starting point to begin researching what is wrong, as there is no error message/code that I can look into.
I cannot pinpoint any notable action in-game that causes the crash. It is not time-based either, I have had play sessions of over an hour before the forced reboot, and I have also had one before even leaving the character selection screen.

I have opened a tech ticket and am awaiting a response there, but also posting here in the hope that a solution can be gained just a little faster, as I doubt I would get a tech ticket response on a Sunday (if I'm wrong, I will be pleasantly surprised).

on reboot windows XP wanted to send an error report, so i let it and it came back with a solution.
the problem was in the realtek drivers. i went out to our PC manufacturers website, pulled the newest drivers and DDO doesn't restart the computer anymore.

I checked Faethe's sound drivers they point to the same device that we had, only difference is our rig is running XP

its still choppy as hell though, sadly even after all that DDO won't be run on that system :-\

Thanks a lot, I also have similar outdated drivers, I had only updated my graphics card drivers and neglected to try the sound one. Take it as a mark of my inexperience that I didn't even consider it as a possible reason for the forced reboots.
The outdated driver is realtek as well, and even older than the ones Faethe had, so it does seem pretty likely that it's the cause.

I'm currently downloading the latest realtek drivers, I'm eager to test the game out again after they are installed. If this fixes the problem I'll be truly elated.

Thanks in advance (even if the issue on my end turns out to be something else, you've at least given me some direction and hope for the time being!).

Doh, after I installed the latest drivers for Realtek High Definition Audio, it seemed well and good for almost an hour, but then the restart happened again.
Looks like that wasn't it (though the updated drivers were welcome in any case).

Not to go against the grain here....

But updating drivers does not, and should not be used, to fix problems. Unless your certain it does in fact fix the problem. Games can cause issue with bad files, updating the drivers can cause other incompatibilities and issues far beyond just the one game.

There is a prime example with nVIDIA. The 15.23 / 15.24 both contain an SATA driver that in some systems causes instability and data corruption. Starting with the 185.xx series Graphical driver, it can cause lockups / freezing / restarts - again, only on certain systems.

I myself have an OUTDATED system of drivers running without issue. Being outdated should IMO be based on the production date of the board to the drivers being used, not based on the latest date of the driver that will install.

Otherwise, the only solution you find on most forums is UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE - and when that fails your left with nothing else to do but update the hardware.

Sometimes people install drivers that exceed their hardware and cause a decrease in performance and stability.

I an attest to this advise. While playing CoD4 I was having issues with Explosions, sound effect, seeming to cause my game/system to freeze. I decided that I would get the newest drivers for my sound card. Made the problem worse. Took forever to get the system to revert to the old drivers too, had to uninstall my sound card and everything. Creative's way of changing drivers, while makes sense, sux.

I have opened a tech ticket and am awaiting a response there, but also posting here in the hope that a solution can be gained just a little faster, as I doubt I would get a tech ticket response on a Sunday (if I'm wrong, I will be pleasantly surprised).

I don't know if the recurrence of the rebooting gremlin is connected to today's downtime, but it has returned with a vengeance. My system rebooted four times while playing tonight [about a 3 hour block of time]. More troubling, all four times I was either a] barely moving or b] standing still. Before, it would generally happen in battle if I suddenly changed direction.

So far, I've double-checked the instructions I was given to adjust my userpreferences.ini file - it did retain the changes I was requested to make, so I don't think that's the problem [hoping, anyway...]. I'll check the in-game bits tomorrow [too frustrated to do it tonight] and will report back here.

I got my reply to the tech ticket and followed the userpreferences.ini changes that were listed in it.
Since then, I've been playing for, hmm, around 10-12 hours if not more, without any sign of the restarts recurring.

I *hope* it's fixed for good, but it would be nice if the issue was addressed in a way that would allow me to crank the settings back up again to the absolute max. The game still looks very nice at the current settings, it could just be so much better.

I just had to send another request for help to tech support. I've dc'd/rebooted 9 times [4x last night, twice this afternoon, and 3 more times this evening] since the scheduled downtime yesterday. [and that's after taking dx10 out of the mix, reducing the engine speed and the frames per second, in addition to the userini file changes that seemed to take care of things last week.

Unfortunately it doesn't quite seem to be fixed. I just had another forced restart, after switching from my cleric to a new warforged for a change of pace, running around the Korthos exploration area.
No graphics/audio settings were changed since the first time, and I had nearly a day and a half of perfectly fine game play so I really had my hopes up.

I am still at a loss for exactly what is causing this forced restart.

If it helps at all, the places I experienced them the most were in Korthos explorer area (no specific area), once in the Cerulean Hills quest where you save the farm + 3 dogs, once in the login screen, once at the end of the Sharn Syndicate marketplace quest where you kill 3 Money Launderers (the 3rd one was at around half hp).

Ooh yes, another one surfaced in my memory, heading northward away from Harbormaster Zin in the Harbor. But this is a place I have also traveled many times without crashing. I don't think it's zone or area based since I was able to return later to all the zones that crashed me and complete them.

Iam also getting frustrated with DDO restarting my computer or freezing up since last week patch. Ive upgraded drivers, down graded drivers. Right now Iam just waiting for tech support email.

It would provide a searchable forum answer to the problem for a lot of us to try, and keep us all from sending in the same support tickets.

I'm having the same problem. On my account, I could log in and chat with the guild, it was fine.

on my girlfriend's account it crashed at character select, and the very first time I booted the game on this computer, it crashed on the opening video.

It runs fine on our Vista laptops, but on this xp desktop, it's not doing so well.

I just downloaded this and started playing last night. I'm having the same issue - play for a little while then my system completely restarts. Windows gives the unexpected shutdown message. Does it during game and/or character creation - I thought my system was overheating, but I tested again with lower graphic settings. I thought that would be a bit strange anyway considering I can run Crysis at full blast.

Running: Vista 64 Home Premium
AMD 9950BE Phenom
8gb DDR2 Ram
2x Nvidia 8800 GTX 1gb

I'm kind of stand offish about updating to new drivers since my computer's about a year old now from when I built it. I'm running an ASUS AM2+ Crossfire Mobo and it's a bit touchy about driver updates sometimes -

Really I shouldn't have ANY hardware problems running this game. Even though my GPU cards are a little dated, they are still pretty good. I should have more than enough machine to play this game.

I wonder if this problem has anything to do with me running a 64bit OS?

I'm putting in a support ticket here in a minute, but any help would be appreciated.

Found this answer on the support site:

"If your computer is randomly rebooting, please try the following:

* Go to Control Panel
* System
* Advanced
* Settings under Startup and Recovery

Under System Failure, there should be an "automatically restart" box. Please uncheck it, so if your system crashes again, you will get an error message which should yield more specific information on the cause of the error.

If this does not work, then the reboots are likely caused by outdated video drivers. Make sure that your video drivers are up to date and then try relaunching DDO.

How to make sure your video drivers are up to date:

1. Run the DXDIAG utility to check you graphic and sound card version. Then check the manufacturer's website and see if there are more up to date versions of your driver.
2. Click the Start button and then click run.
3. Type in DXDIAG.
4. Click OK. The DirectX Diagnostic tool opens up.
5. Click on the Display tab on the top of the page. In the upper left corner of the screen under Device it will tell you the name of your graphics card and the manufacturer. In the upper right corner under drivers it will tell you the driver date and version you are currently using.
6. Click the sound tab on the top of the page (next to the display tab). In the upper left hand side under Device it will display the name of your sound card.
In the upper right hand side under Drivers it will tell you the version and date of audio driver you are currently using.

If this does not resolve your concern, please contact Turbine Technical Support."
