Default New player and need advice

Hi I just downloaded the free game today and was wondering what class would be good to learn the game basics with? I'd like to not be totally gear dependent and be able to solo and be useful to groups. I'm thinking a drawf barbarian with of the precreated paths, is that a good idea? I am really unsure about it so any advice is welcomed.

Yes, it's a good choice. It's a fairly straightforward class with not much to worry about. It'll be easy to manage for a beginner.

If you want suggestions as to which path to take, I'll tell that Bastion of the Outlands is very bad but that the other two are fine. Savage of the Wild is good for two-handed weapon users whereas Storm of Kargon is good for dual wielders. Neither are optimal but they are "good enough" for the basics.

I also considered rogue with a path or using the template called frenzied berserker that's posted above for a human barbarian.

I would also suggest a dwarven cleric as a first character, particularly if you want to explore content by yourself.

Clerics can fight well enough at low level, and the self-healing is quite nice.
You may know me as: Gannot, Gonnet, Gunnet, Ginnet, Gaxxat, Gennot, Gannut, Gxnnxt, Horseface, Izzayhay, Pailmaster, Artifactual, Gynnet and/or Barred. What? I like alts.

Oh, there is a path called Frenzied Berserker now? Hmm, maybe they have changed the names by now. Since the Compendium is down at the moment I can't check. How many are paths are there now and what are there names (if you remember)?

As for rogues, it's a much tougher class to play and has little to no solo capability (if you care about that part).

If that's you want, that's fine but it'll be more challenging.

I would not suggest a rogue as a starting character. They are a tricky class to get right. They are fairly squishy, and it's very easy to grab aggro at low level with a rogue due to the amount of sneak damage you can output.

Oh no it's posted in the sticky above called Templates for new players. It's called Frenzied Brute, my mistake.

It's supposedly a Conan type, human with two handed sword. Not sure how well humans fair as barbarians though, should I use this template or make a drawf and use the two handed weapon path?

Play what you think is fun. You already chose something that is ok you do not need our permission to make your own judgement.

Barbarian is a very straight forward class to play. It's very low on gear dependency (You weapon is your only real concern and you can use the end reward axe out of Delera's well into higher levels). However, a barb is NOT solo friendly at all unless you have deep pockets for lots of health pots.

Sword & Board Paladin might be worth looking into as a starter.
Class perks and wand healing capable(cheaper for new players)
Just a thought, but as someone already pointed out, play what is
    fun for you.

    Cheers

Oh, you mean Aranticus' templates! That's even better. Without a doubt, that's a solid build. Go for it.

Human is fine but if you want dwarf, just post in that you want a dwarf version of the same build and he'll tell you the changes he would make.

It's solid at low levels but at higher levels it becomes ridiculously gear dependant which the OP does not want.

Actually I'm not sure I wouldn't prefer a human, being a Conan type would be fun.

I was going to respond to the OP, but got lost at the username..

I suddenly feel a compelling urge to shout "Sink NAVY!!"
