The openAL update is all well and good, but my system doesn't have issues with any other software besides DDO. I did update to the latest ATi driver, and the black screen error seems to be gone... BUT, now i get random lockups ingame... I'm going to try tweaking some of the DX10 settings.

I began receiving this error after the latest patch. I was able to play without any noticable problems previous to the installation of the latest patch and I didn't install anything new before or since. For me, if I let the black screen sit awhile, it eventually switches to a loading screen while simultaneously displaying an error window which mentions the "Logon Server is full". If I click the "ok" button, I am forced to exit the entire application. Has anyone else let their black screen run for a period of time (say about a minute) and noticed anything like this?

Just to add some data to help bug-squash, I have tried the "Detect & Repair" option in the download manager thing (which I apparently needed to install as a retail installation did not install this application, even after updating to the latest game build) which ended with the same results as before (black screen).

I forced the game to render in a window after I encountered this problem to test whether my system had locked up or not (it had not). This was done by modifiying the "UserPreferences.ini" file setting "FullScreen=" from "True" to "False" and ensuring that the setting "WindowedResolution=" was set to "1024x768" (a very common stable resolution). I noticed that I was unable to minimize the window or do anything else with it while it was in it's black screen phase.

I use Windows XP Pro SP3 with an Intel P4e 3.2 GHz processor with 2 gigs of dual channel memory, and an Nvidia Geforce 7800GS AGP card.

Hmmm this may sound ******** but it may be that the OpenAL32.dll version I have is for 64 bit, despite that "32" being in there. Try downloading the latest version from here http://connect.creativelabs.com/open...ds/oalinst.zip, run the installer, then copy the newly created OpenAL32.dll from your C:\Windows\system32 folder. To the DDO install directory.

And I understand your system doesn't have issues with any other software than DDO, like I said this is only a fix that worked for me with the black scree loading error. You may want to check your GPU temp settings as some games randomly cause the GPU to overheat. As crazy as it sounds, it's happened to me trying to run guild wars, only game that causes the issue.

This game was working for me when it still was downloading the rest 4.81gb part. Today it finished downloading and when I try to log in this happens for me.
    I tried:
    fullscreen=False in user file
Changing OpenAL file from the link survient has given
waited minutes and minutes at the black screen. It will still be black without any errors. But when I press enter it gives me the "An authentication error occured. Please try logging in again." error.
Tried validate/repair option in turbine manager which turned out with no problems.

Could it be that it has something to do with downloading the last part of the game as it was no problem for me to log in and out many times before, without errors. Are there anyone there who downladed the full game himself? I mean without turbine download manager. I wonder...

I was playing on the island and when I finished all the quests there and wanted to go to Harbor I had to wait because the whole content wasn't downloaded yet. So I clicked off the game and waited a couple of hours. Now when I want to log in I can choose the server and after that I get a very quick black screen and everything is gone again.

I'm now using the repair tools, in the hope that this will fix it...hopefully.

Default Got it to launch... Sort of.

I think I have been having the same problem as a lot of people, right after I log in I see a circular icon on the screen and then it goes black. At that point the program goes to "not responding."

After trying most of what has been posted here without any luck. So I tried disabling the sound on my computer and this seemed to make it work, although I do not have any sound. If Turbine could just come out with a sign language version of the game I would be all set.

    Here is what I did:
(I am running Windows 7 64bit, but I would guess that Vista is the same.)

Right click on the speaker icon on the task bar and choose "Playback Devices"
From the Playback tab right click on your sound devices and choose "Disable" (I disabled everything.)
Click ok to make the changes and try and launch the game.

Not sure why this works, I will keep playting with things and post back if I have any luck.

    My System:

Asus P6 Delux V2 Motherboard (integrated sound card.)
    Intel I7 920 Processor
    Nvida GTX 295
    6gb Ram
    Windows 7 64-bit

    Good luck..

Default Updated sound drivers. Working now..

Ok just updating my last post...

I installed the latest drivers for integrated sound on my PC and everything seems to be working! My motherboard uses the Soundmax drivers, I installed version 6.10.2.6570 (It is a beta driver for Windows 7.)

Hope that helps someone out there..

Default Black screen of death after a few seconds in-game...

On a fresh install of Windows XP with the latest drivers for my machine, I downloaded the hi-res version of DDO and installed it, then let it do its patching / installing .NET 1.1 etc. After making a character, I logged in and started playing and within a few seconds I got a total Black Screen of Death. I could hear the game sounds for about 30 seconds, then the sound started looping and the system hard rebooted.

Other games - Enemy Territory-Quake Wars, Oblivion, Modern Warfare, Mass Effect, Eve Online - play flawlessly and repeatedly without any issues.

This black screen crash is the EXACT SAME THING as drove me away from playing LOTRO, another Turbine game. I actually helped found the Black Screen - Gathering Information thread in the LOTRO Tech Support forums about this, but when I quit paying for a game I couldn't play, I got shut out of the LOTRO forums and can't see the status of the thread now.

So there's two different Turbine games crashing out my medium-high end gaming laptop (carefully built by professional engineers with quality components to run these games) with the exact same problem, while other games cause me no problems at all.

I'm going to recommend that someone from Turbine go around to all of Turbine's game forums and collect up all of the Black Screen of Death posts and take this matter up higher. Per my experience, this problem exists across games, and that means that Turbine as a company is using a tool or platform that causes the BlackSOD issue in all of their products.

    Default 'Sigh'

Alright. This is my first post, but I have been watching this thread for quite some time andI have been working on this game for literally a month now, to no avail. I have attempted all of the reccomended solutions that have been provided in the thread and I am still having no luck. After I install, the log in screen comes up and I am able to log in and choose my server. As soon as I select the server, my screen turns black, then it simply reverts back to my desktop. However....next time I attempt to open the game, it forces me to reinstall in repair mode.

I have attempted repair literally 15 times with all of the possible solutions, and STILL I am having the same problem. I have a feeling it is because of my Vista, as I have recently been able to catch the very last second of a notice on my toolbar that states something about the program having a color compatabiliy issue. I think the game is attempting to change the color setup of vista to run the game, but Vista is rejecting the change. When I attempt to change my color settings in display, I do not have any other option other than medium and high color. I have literally no idea what this game wants me to do, and I am going to switch to windows 7 next week simply because I am at my breaking point with both vista and this game. If anyone has any further suggestions....by all means, let me have it.

The Vista "color setting" popup can steal focus. It's likely a red herring, though. It exists in Win7, too, and doesn't cause (huge) issues. You can avoid it coming up by going into Compatibility settings for your DDO shortcut and selecting "Disable Desktop Composition". That way, Vista will switch out of Aero when you start the launcher, and you won't get the switch popup when the game proper launches.

That you have to repair is interesting. That suggests that game files are getting corrupted. Have you tested with your AV disabled completely? Can you tell which game files are being repaired? Is there a pattern to that? Those kind of questions.

How does that behave when you turn off sound completely? Is this on-board? What's the temperature of your GPU when you run DDO? You'll want to isolate the cause of _your_ Black Screen.

Yes, DDO is very, very hard on resources. Any little thing that's not quite right can cause black screen, whereas other games work fine. There is an argument to be made that the game may be too exacting: Changing that is likely not an easy thing, though.

I don't think that'll happen. A user-created page on myDDO with the information found so far, or a sticky, might be nice, though.

There are so many different causes of the black screen. Hardware failure. Sound drivers. Graphics drivers. .NET 1.1 issues. AntiVirus. I know I'm just scratching the surface with that list. Of those, the one that Turbine can do something about - and should, and soon - is .NET 1.1. This code will run with minimal alterations on .NET 2.0, which would save users a lot of headache, and would bring additional customers to the game.

As for the other issues: Short of finding out why the Turbine engine is so demanding, and changing that, those issues can't be alleviated by Turbine. That changing the engine is even desirable is up for debate. For all we users know, the code that causes such high stress is so much an integral part of the engine that it cannot be changed without a substantial rewrite.

Hi. Taking your points in reverse order:
    1. The company is the only entity that should ever make calls on what they can and can't do regarding technical support issues. The forums are here for us to report it, not make that decision for them.
    2. My machine is a gaming laptop, one of the more powerful ones out there, and specifically known for its reliability. It can play Crysis Warhead at just under 30fps and plays many other heavy games flawlessly and in rapid succession. I don't even reboot for months at a time - just sleep it at night, then wake it up and use it all day. In short, save for Turbine games, it just works and works well.
    3. Whatever the cause of this black screen is, it's only on Turbine games. And only recently too. LOTRO caused me no problems on this same machine until the Mines of Moria release, and I found many a poster in the Black Screen thread claiming the same - only after the expansion did this problem show up. I'm here posting because I find DDO does it too, but I'm presuming that there's technology sharing going on between the two products.
    3. IMO (as a 15 year IT industry veteran) anybody who relies on Microsoft technology is just asking for in-your-face failures. They have no accountability to their customers, and that always means they will ship what works for them, not what works for you.
    4. I've troubleshot the machine by monitoring CPU and GPU temps, changing the sound to an external card with a different chip, changing the display and resolution, unplugging all USB devices as recommended, disabling the antivirus, and generally jumping through hoops, including my recent clean installation just to test DDO. The only reliable method of playing LOTRO is to turn the graphics settings down to Low Quality (haven't tried that on DDO yet). I can crank up the settings in Everquest II, Enemy Territory - Quake Wars, Mass Effect, etc., and the frame rates just get lower - no crashes whatsoever.

I know everyone in Tech Support is used to their product being blamed for things that are actually machine or configuration related, but I have got to have one of the cleanest, most reliable builds out here, because I specifically went for it when I bought this machine. So I have to call it this a game problem, not a machine problem.

    Default Black Screen Error

    Hey Everyone;

I've read this entire post front to back, and well I have been having INGAME black screens, I get past the log in and through character select without any problems. But once I get into the game a short time afterwards the game locks up and goes black screen. I have a new system.

Crosshair 3 Formula MB from Asus
    AMD Athlon x4 630 2.8
    2gigs of ddr3 ram
and a PowerColor PCS HD 4670 (ATI) 1 gig video card.

Now this happens about 10 minutes into the game. I really need some help.
