Yes, DDO is very, very hard on resources. Any little thing that's not quite right can cause black screen, whereas other games work fine. There is an argument to be made that the game may be too exacting: Changing that is likely not an easy thing, though.
I don't think that'll happen. A user-created page on myDDO with the information found so far, or a sticky, might be nice, though.
There are so many different causes of the black screen. Hardware failure. Sound drivers. Graphics drivers. .NET 1.1 issues. AntiVirus. I know I'm just scratching the surface with that list. Of those, the one that Turbine can do something about - and should, and soon - is .NET 1.1. This code will run with minimal alterations on .NET 2.0, which would save users a lot of headache, and would bring additional customers to the game.
As for the other issues: Short of finding out why the Turbine engine is so demanding, and changing that, those issues can't be alleviated by Turbine. That changing the engine is even desirable is up for debate. For all we users know, the code that causes such high stress is so much an integral part of the engine that it cannot be changed without a substantial rewrite.
