I managed to get in game. I don't know if this is a fluke.

Earlier, I ran a file repair, it found ~250MB missing. I still wasn't able to run the game after this. I just ran a SECOND file repair, it still found ~250MB missing. After that, I restarted my computer and no black screen. I'm at the character selection screen.

Give that a try even if the first file repair didn't work?

You may want to tell people how you did a repair.

When I had a problem like this, switching from fullscreen to windowed mode (or vice-versa) seemed to get graphics back up. Could be worth a try...

It's in the Turbine download manager. Just launch it, instead of clicking play on DDO, click on the arrow and "Validate and repair".

Black Screen, but no cursor, its just locked. Running it with admin privileges, latest DX and last stable drivers. HD4850 and i7, 6gig DDR on Vista64. Seems DDO may have issues with ATI cards.
Not sure if this will help but I don't run the game under an administrator account. I also installed the game in a separate folder I created outside my program files folder. Works with both vista 32 and 64.

Tried all, doesn't work. Looks like DDO is also causing me other issues as well, my systems now BSODing, and its never done that before. This is one highly suspect piece of software, tho the use of .net would have suggested that from the outset.

    Default Same Here

Vista 32, screen goes black with mouse visible, goes no further. Hit enter or esc and it comes out with the authentication error.

    Trying the file repair.

Let me know if the file repair works for you, as this can be a very irritating bug.

I see almost the same thing.

    1) I login
    2) I choose a world and click play
    3) I see a black screen and a custom mouse cursor
    4) I hear the Windows hardware inserted sound and soon after the hardware removed sound - these two sounds continues to loop. One playing - then the next .. over and over and over again.

I tried opening the Device Manager and I see HID input devices showing up and disappearing again.

    Very weird.

I'm using a laptop with an ATI radeon X700 Mobility and Windows XP SP3

    Thumbs up

Black screens at startup just after you pick a server and start entering the game can have a few causes.

    1. Firewall, double check to make sure that it's allowing "dndclient.exe" outbound (and it's allowed to accept inbound connections) access to the internet.

    2. Screen resolution set by the games default detection is not supported or is causing issues with the monitor,
    • If it's opened/closed previously there should be a "userpreferences.ini" file in your "My Documents" (XP) or "Documents" (Vista) > "Dungeons and Dragons Online" folder if so open that file and make sure that under the [Display] section that the number following "Resolution=" matches what your Windows desktop screen resolution is set to.
    • If it hasn't opened and closed before that file may not have been created, in that case try going into the options of the launcher (click the first button in the upper right corner on the launcher, the one with the single down-arrow on it) and in there under the "Repair" tab click to enable the "Reset game display settings" option, click Ok and try logging in again.
    3. USB drivers or devices.
    • If you have any USB devices, keyboards mice headsets etc try disconnecting and reconnecting them and resinstalling their drivers.
    • If you have a "Saitek" or "Logitech" keyboard this can happen, also comes up with Wacom tablets as well.
    4. Outdated or corrupted drivers for sound card or video cards
    • Check with your PC maker, the card maker or (and in the case of many "onboard" sound cards) the motherboard manufacturer for the most updated drivers available
    • Make sure DirectX is as updated as possible if needed via the link here.
If these options don't help you pin down the cause defintely open a support request.

    Default Thanks

Thanks Mirthgar for the reply I've been trying to get all the things that everyone's come up with for awhile now to work with no avail.
It's good to narrow down what could be causing it so thank you for that I'll have my brother help me with these things and create a ticket if we still can't make it work.

Found out my pen tablet was the culprit DDO up and running now, I had to uninstall my pen tablets drivers to get it to work, which was kind of a bummer, but at least not a big deal.

I had this problem with my son's older WinXP Pro PC.
It has an ATI Radeon x700 series card. I hadn't updated the drivers on it in ages.
BUT it was running the game just fine they way it was.

So, today I updated the Catalyst software and drivers to the latest and greatest..ran the game and got the nice new black screen.
I tried to override all the settings and set everything back to low, but no luck. The only thing that fixed it was rolling the driver back.

I'm not sure how much support anyone is going to get from ATI if using a similar card..or one even remotely close as they have all be deemed "Legacy".

I'm using an ATI x700 as well, though my problem is a bit different. I can get into the game just fine, but it dndclient.exe crashes about 3 times an hour. Nothing I can do about it.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was DDOs .net bugs that are causing issues with the ATI users as ATI drivers (config software) use .net. Back in the day MS wanted a large chunk of Vista software coded in it. Of course when it was discovered how bad .net was people ran the other way, to late for ATI tho who had blazed a trail as they often do.

Its down to waiting for patches from Turbine I guess.
