    Wisdom needs to be higher.

In order for you to cast any of your cleric spells you need to have your casting stat (Wisdom for clerics) at 10+ the lvl of the spell you are tryign to cast.

    What this means is:

    1st lvl = 11wis
    2nd lvl = 12wis
    3rd lvl = 13wis
    etc....
To err is human, to forgive is divine. Neither of which is Marine Corps policy

Typical cleric wants to start with 17 or 18 wisdom as it both effects your SP, and your Spell DC. And as you found out if too low can make you not even able to cast them at all. For 99% of clerics wisdom is the single most important stat.

Best idea would be to make a new cleric and mail it all your stuff. As most clerics like I said start with 17-18 wisdom. They they do all the things they can to raise it like tomes, stat items, level up points etc. If you have 8-10 starting wisdom there is not much you can do for that cleric to help it long term. I mean a level up, +6 stat item, and a tome would let you cast all spells. But wow, good luck casting anything other than heal or buff and expecting it to stick. Really reccomend if you have only been playing a week to make a new cleric.

What are your starting stats, particularly wisdom. Also what are your plans for your character later in the game. Do you wish to remain a fighter primarily?

Depending on your starting wisdom you may be able to fix the wisdom issue in short order.

I was curious as to the reasoning behind picking up a level of cleric as that will also allow us to greater tune our advice to your particular needs. Do you want to be a fighter with heals, or a healer with fighting skills, or none of the above?

In this game it is very easy to build a character that turns out to be gimp. If you tell us what you plan for your finalized character the people here should be able to set you up with a competent build and advice on what to look towards and what to avoid.

Unfortunately, the in-game help isn't as clear as it could be about exactly how high you need particular stats to be, nor is it clear on whether you can rely on temporary boosts to get you there.

As others have said, you need a wisdom of 11 to cast 1st level spells and one additional point of wisdom for each additional spell level. If you don't have that amount of wisdom innately, it's perfectly acceptable to get there by equipping a wisdom-boosting item or selecting a wisdom-boosting enhancement, though you should recognize that you'll temporarily lose the ability to cast spells if/when you unequip them.

For other purposes, though, it is *not* acceptable to reach the threshold in this way. If you wanted the two-weapon fighting feat but lacked the DEX to take it, for example, you wouldn't be allowed to make up the difference through an item or enhancement and then take the feat. You'd have to rely on your innate DEX score for that, which includes only the points you assigned at character creation, the points you've gained by reading stat-boosting tomes, and the permanent stat boosts you gain every four levels.

I usually hate it when people start yelling "reroll" whenever this type of thing comes up, but if you really do intend on increasing your cleric levels and using cleric spells, you have got to start out with a high wisdom score. Unfortunately, there is just no way around it.

The DDO wiki has some good information in it about pretty much everything. You can look there more info.
