    Talking Arkat's Pet Peeves

Gornn's got his "New Player Inititiative" and "Ask Gornn" threads and Shaamis has his "Ask the Drunken Monk" thread.

I want my own thread too. However, I will not be dispensing advice to the lovelorn, the misanthropes, the maniacs, the depressed, or the manic depressives.

No, I will be posting my pet peeves to see who else is as retentive as I am!

I'm thinking of posting my pet peeves in a couple of formats.

    1) I just might come out and say what it is.

    2) I might post a quote from someone on the DDO forums and just let you guys guess what it is that bugs me about it.

For sure there will be a lot of grammar peeves but there will also be some others.

I'll start my list in the next post.

    P.S. Raegoul...don't disappoint me.

Ok, let's start off with a quote for you to figure out why it bugs me and then I'll just post one straight out. I'll add to this list over the next few days/weeks/whatever.

    1) Here's one that was posted today. Can anyone tell me why this bugs me???

    I usually get on around 6:30 - 7:00 p.m. Pacific Standard time.

    2) Ok, here's a grammar one.

Do many people know the difference between "effect" and "affect" and how to use them?

Here's a sentence that does something I don't think many people can do correctly. That is, use effect and affect properly in the same sentence. Here goes:

The magic effect on your weapon will affect your enemies differently depending on their alignment.

    3) I don't know how many times I or Raegoul have typed this but this annoys me bunches:

    Hi welcome.
    Wrong!!!

    Hi Welcome
    Right!!!

    4) What is it about the following sentence that peeves me so much? (There are two)

Plx come back in 3 to 7 month's.

    5) How hard is it for High School Civics classes to teach when Freedom of Speech applies and when it doesn't???

It would also be nice if English classes would teach how to spell "speech" correctly and how to form contractions correctly.

It seems that I cant complain here or all my posts gets deleted.

PLEASE TURBINE instead of denying freedom of speach, do something, we are the ones paying for your salaries, we are your customers, we deserve the right to complain.

    6) I'm annoyed by some people who post pictures of themselves on the "See who you're talking to... KHYBER!" thread. Which people annoy me you ask? Those who've never posted in the forums in any other thread.

I'm thinking to myself, "I have no idea who you are. Why on earth would you possibly think we're interested in seeing a picture of you?"

    7) Along the same lines as peeve #6 above, sometimes people who never post in the forums feel like they have to post a "goodbye" thread when they leave the game.

Why??? You never post here. We don't know you. We certainly won't miss you. Just keep your obscurity intact and disappear!

    8) Another thing that bugs the cr@p out of me is when I'm sitting at a red traffic signal and some guy pulls up or drives by with his windows rolled down and his 6000 watt car stereo and subwoofer blaring! Usually they're playing some pretty offensive stuff like "gangsta" rap or something with so much bass that the vibrations they're generating is enough to make me queasy. What I'd love to see is their transmission fall out due to the welds, bolts, and stuff vibrating apart!

    9) One sure way to get me going is to say some guy (usually a sports star or a famous actor) made a "mistake" when he committed some sort of criminal or immoral act. When people say Rick Pitino made a mistake by committing adultery or Michael Vick made a mistake by being involved with dog-fighting, I cringe and then let those who say such things know exactly how I feel.

Let's get one thing straight. Neither of these guys made a "mistake." A mistake is when you're doing some addition and you forget to carry the "1" and you come up with an incorrect answer. A mistake is when you made a left-hand turn when you should have made a right-hand turn and now you're late for that job interview. No, those guys didn't make a mistake. Rick Pitino meant to do the nasty with that woman and Michael Vick meant to be involved with dog-fighting on his property. Sure you can say they did something terribly unwise or incredibly stupid but you can't say they made a "mistake."

To a certain extent, saying they made a "mistake" excuses their awful behavior and absolves them of some of their behavior when they should be taking full responsibility for it. What they did was their fault and they meant to do it. They didn't make any "mistakes."

    10) Here's a HUGE sports pet peeve of mine:

I constantly see and hear some American Football players referred to as "All Pro position x firstname lastname" in newspapers and sports talk radio. This irks me to no end because 9 times out of 10 the player is NOT an All-Pro. He's a Pro Bowl player instead.

What's the difference between someone selected to the Pro Bowl and someone selected as an All-Pro? A lot. 99.5% of the time, an All-Pro (an AP All-Pro to be exact) is also selected to play in the Pro Bowl. Less than half of those selected to the Pro Bowl make the All-Pro team.

The Pro Bowl is an all-star game where teams of good players are selected from the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference. This game between the two conferences usually takes place two or three weeks after the Superbowl in Hawaii.

The AP All-Pro team is selected regardless of in which conferences the players happen to play. On the First-Team (the best players) All-Pro team there are usually one Quarteback, two Running Backs, one Fullback, two Receivers, one Center, two Guards, two Offensive Tackles, one Tight-end, one Placekicker, one Punter, one Kick Returner, two Defensive Ends, two Defensive Tackles, two Safeties, two Cornerbacks, two Inside Linebackers, and two Outside Linebackers.

The AP All-Pro team doesn't play anyone or anything like that. They're just recognized as the best players at their positions in the NFL (National Football League).

Guess who votes for the AP All-Pro team? Sports writers and sports broadcasters!!

So you'd think if anyone was going to know the difference between an All-Pro and a Pro Bowl player and actually use the terms correctly, it would be the sports writers in the newspapers and the broadcasters on sports talk radio. But, to my constant annoyance, such is not the case!

    11. Other people's "peeve" or "annoying things" threads!

You should rename it to Arkat's pocket lint.
Pocket lint is usually interesting(lol) but at the same time annoying.

    just saying.

1.) I would guess that this bugs you because Standard Time doesn't start until November? It should read 'PDT' instead of 'PST'.

2.) Yes, I know how to use them properly... but if THAT bothers you, I imagine you're like me and could go on for hours about grammar peeves! (EDIT: I just have to add one of my personal 'biggies': improper apostrophe usage. Drives me batty, it does.)

I don't know about "hours" but I have my share of peeves in that area.

    +1 Rep for you!

Essentially neglecting expectancy of the affect on him she effectively left his stature erect of mind and spirit among other things.

I cannot spell and my grammar atrociousness... Now please excuse me, Slink was kind enough to provide dinner and entertain me in the other thread... may just remain in bath, skip entrée and plunge into dessert.

Yeah I never understood that especailly when they type it out. It would be technically correct to just say "Pacific Time" and less words to type. Maybe they moved to CA from AZ where its always MST?

Bah! Time warp! GMT is no longer the standard ... we now use UTC which is far more precise than that antiquted queen's GMT.
And you will never convice me its easier for me to type "18:00 UTC -6:00" instead of "6PM central"

Don't even get me started about the Metric System - makes me proud that we are stubborn and pig headed enough to go against the rest of the world - especially as the Metric System seems so sensible

You do realise we all have our little jokes about that, right?

I can imagine trying to teach the average American to divide by 10 - oh the mental anguish!!

My high school sweetheart was from Canada originally. Her first car was the family sedan "hand me down." The speedometer on it was in kilometers per hour instead of miles per hour. Needless to say, she was always late for everything for the first year of driving....

You realize that's incorrect? GMT does not set the clock forward one hour for Daylight savings. Most (not all) of the countries DO. Do you have any idea how weird it is to be one hour south of Greenwich, England and not be on the same time?

Arizona is on the right track.
