    Default 5 FTR / 1 WIZ - now where?

Really tempted to revive an old Elf character I levelled to 6 as a 5 Fighter / 1 Wizard.
Reasoning was simple - the Elven Displacement TWF fighter idea, picking up a level of Wizard for Extend metamagic, access to wands (stoneskin, etc.), and the like, but staying more of a dps Fighter with minor magic, than a Wizard with swords.

I eventually shelved him as I wasn't quite sure where to go with him, and dual-wielding at that level was horribly ineffective as he took a lot of damage (and will take even more with splash damage next mod).

I suppose I could continue with a 19/1 split, although I'd miss out on the Fighter capstone which is pretty upsetting to go that far down Fighter and not get that.

I could also throw in 6 levels of Ranger to get that competence Haste bonus from Tempest, but then that's a pretty whacky multiclass - Fighter/Ranger/Wizard? Hmmm.

The other option I was thinking was to up his Wizard levels high enough that he doesn't require wands for most spells, and can simply cast them himself. With a 12 Fighter / 8 Wizard split he'd be able to access Kensai II, plus self-cast Stoneskin, Dimension Door, Enervation, Fire Shield, Lesser Globe, Haste, Prot from Energy, etc. Ultimately this looks like it might be his best option at this point, but I'm not 100% sure. He'd have a slightly lower BAB and hps, and could be somewhat squishy as a result.

Any ideas on what to do with him?

    Leave it on the shelf.

If you want a figher with access to wands, you are far better off putting some UMD on the fighter. That would give you both arcane an divine wands and scrolls as well as RR equipment and weapons.

    I have a 11/5 ranger/wizard that is a lot of fun...

    So I'd vote 12/8 fighter/wizard...

Shield, Jump, Blur, Haste, Rage, Displacement, Firewall, Solid Fog, Fire Shield...

Matched with Kensai II, you'd do just fine...

But if you're only level 6, you might as well just start over, and build exactly what you want...

It is like going to a museum and bragging about how fast you made it through. Or bragging about how fast you finished a good steak.

Yeah, still tempted to shelve him indefinitely, to be honest. Or just delete and reroll. Hard to say.

I think the main reason I eventually put him aside was that (1) he was my first char, so he ended up unlocking Drow and then I explored various other options that Drow characters offered, and promptly forgot about him; and (2) in making a Fighter/Wizard, it almost felt as if I was trying to recreate the Bard class, which can easily make a TWF displaced/hasted meleer. In which case, why not just make a Bard?

But now that I look at it again, there's still something tempting about a Fighter/Wiz. A Bard wouldn't naturally get access to Shield, Jump, Firewall, or Fire Shield, all of which are nice - although the Bard could cast them via UMD if he/she had a scroll or wand. There's also something tempting about a heavily-armoured TWF fighter, as well, hence my reluctance to build this idea using a Bard (who wears light armour).

I'd rather not cross-class UMD on a Fighter build if I can help it. They have precious few skill points to spare anyways, and I can't be arsed to carry around potions of GH, a cartouche, and whatever else just so that I can self-buff myself. Even having spell failure with armour on is mildly annoying to me, but that's still much more tolerable than having to carry a gazillion wands, scrolls, and +UMD/CHA gear.

    Argh. Dunno :/

I agree with Thrudh... wacky multiclasses can be very fun, and far more effective than 90% of the party leaders who ignore/decline realize

Since this was your first character, it's very likely that you have learned a lot since you rolled him up, and would be wise to build from scratch.

    Mostly to OP.
I have a Rgr7/Rog4/Wiz5 who I also think is a lot of fun to play.
I also have a lowbie Rgr4/Wiz1. And I'd like to do a couple other Rgr/Wiz combos.

Anyway, I wouldn't reroll unless you really think he won't do what you want.
But the real question is what do you want him to do?
Are his stats where they need to be for your goals?

I like the Wiz 1 extend, dragon marked idea.
2min Shield for TWF or ranged. Access to some good wands. Flame Arrow, Stoneskin, remove curse....higher lvl shield wands....etc.
Can qualify for Arcane Archer if that is what you want.

I made a high Dex Ftr and added Ranged and TWF feats to him. Of course many would say, why not just make a Rgr then?

Anyway, decide what you want from him. Decide if his stats will support it.
And ask about any specifics. There's a few open minded players who will give you advice other than scrap anything that goes against the status quo.

If you do not have a high AC, you will NOT see the Gazing damage often. I dont understand why people dont get this. Grazing hits do not stack with regular hits. If a mob normally hits you on a 15 or better anyway, its just a normal hit.

if you take a lot of damage now, you will take a lot of damage in mod 9. but NOT because of Grazing hits.
