Definitly think Spock is a sidekick, second-in-comand and all. Not doubting his overwelming popularity though.
Blackcat & Spider-Man I could read about forever, I thought that super-couple had some super potential.
How about Captain America's Falcon?

I don't know if anyone remembers [B]The Tick[B] cartoon. And this was a temporary sidekick while Arthur was ill.
Boy who turns his eyelids inside out.
Second in command doesn't automatically equal sidekick. Sidekicks can't and don't usually carry entire storylines by themselves over a period of time. Spock's character development was far better than Kirk's and Spock more than once carried story arcs in the series and even entire movies.
Let's face facts, Kirk's character development was rather shallow. Arrogant, smug but successful womanizing leader who kissed all the girls then slapped them. (Yes, at some point in the series, Kirk slapped every single woman he kissed.) No inner turmoil, noreal human failings, no complexity. I enjoyed watching Kirk, Spock was the far more fascinaitng character. Inner conflict because of his mixed parentage, occasionally awkward social interactions, more complex personality. Kirk was a replaceable character. Any TV-perfect captain would do. Spock was unique and definitely not replaceable.

If we are talking "Sidekicks"
Then I would have to say no, Samwise was more than a sidekick.
But Merry, and Pippen would definitely qualify.
And you cannot forget
one of the most well known sidekicks of all time.
